The gym is gradually becoming a dating app offline. I've been a proponent of health and fitness for a long time. I remember back then when I used to jog around my street to keep myself fit and stuff like that.
I know the benefits of keeping fit. You don't need to come and tell me and I know that is very necessary to life but here we are. Life is changing and the gym that we are having these days is another thing.
Gym is gradually stopping from being a place to exercise. It has become a social club, a place of meet-and-greets. A place where people take pictures, where girls go in half-clad or unclad, and where they get to meet other guys.
We can define gym these days as a dating platform with dumbbells. Yes that is what it has become. When you walk into some gym and instead of seeing people workout what they are doing is turning on their instagram and going live on tiktok to video themselves raising one weight or the other.
There are also men that are looking for women and vice versa. It's also now filled with single parents who are yearning to meet new new young me to start a life. And there are another set of people who all they do is to take gym selfies between sets.
There are another set of people who have developed this perfect relationship with the mirror. While you are still trying to finish your own workout another person is doing his best to advertise her body to you. If you decide to make efforts to talk, it will be seen as too rude.
If you keep to yourself the female gender might come at you trying to tempt you in every way. Even if that did not even happen let's assume everyone in the gym are male. The body odor that comes with gym is not a child's play.
It can make you vomit if you are not careful. What I now find very strange when it comes to gym is when the social purpose begins competing with the actual purpose of the place because that is what is turning into gradually. And social media is not helping either.
There are some of these people that share tips on Instagram and TikTok. Whenever they are listing places where you can meet new people they list the gym. The wealthy has come to know that this is one of the ways that they can get caught, so they get the gym in their own house.
If you are very conversant with online platform you find a lot of gym video, transformation picture, workout influencers, couples that are meeting at the gym and some people are daily documenting their gym diary. The gym is gradually becoming a fitness centre, a content studio and a social gathering all at once. You begin to wonder are we actually trying to get fit here or we are doing all this for the camera.
The most serious part of a gym is the smell. People smell a lot in the gym and the odor is not something that is palatable. It's not sweet.
This is sweat, water and salt smelling out of the enclosed area and you cannot remove sweating out of the gym. It comes together like a total package. There is a difference between only you sweating in one place and a lot of people with their different body odor exercising in an enclosed place and the next thing the entire accumulation of the body odor and sweat of everybody is coming at you all at once.
If you are not careful and there is poor ventilation in that place you can vomit. Especially if you are very sensitive to strong smell. This has made gym experience to be an unpleasant one for me over a period of time.
So what some few gyms do these days is to do open hair exercise early in the morning or on Saturdays. It's easy that way. Any gym that is enclosed I run away from it and I believe gym instructors and owners should walk around making sure that their environment is well ventilated.
Though my complaint about gym is not an excuse to avoid exercise. I still exercise a lot and I remind myself about it. What I do is I can take a walk, run, cycle back, stretch, exercise at home, take the stairs, play football, dance.
I do move around consistently too. Instead of taking a taxi or a car back to back I can decide to take a walk from one place to the other and keep myself fit. Fitness is not a punishment, we all have to know that.
And it's not a must that you will be lifting enormous weights and becoming obsessed with six pack or because you ate your body. Fitness goes more than that. A little walk here and there, a 30 minute walk, 40 minute walk here and there can really help you to be fit for the rest of your life at least for a long period of time.
I will still want to try going to gym sometimes later. I will get a very good headphone and find a least crowded corner that I can use and I will make sure that the ventilation is perfectly working. Then I will hit the dumbbells and the weights very well.
I believe my body still needs more moves and I still need to be more fit and I'm not going to lose sight of that.
