I have seen people who are looking more expensive, nice clothes, nice shoes, a lot and lot, nice car, expensive restaurant, weekend trip, luxury but they don't know how to manage their wealth. You look at some of them and what you see is that this person has made it in life but you don't see what's happening behind the camera. There is a lot of debt, loans, unpaid bills, credit card balance, lying fallow there without anybody to pay for it.
The pressure to maintain the same lifestyle next month is what everyone is expecting. There are so many people that are struggling deep down and they have already gone bankrupt but they are living large right in front of every one of us and this is what the social media does not show until maybe you later see the FBI locking someone behind bars for tax evasion and stuff like that. That is when you notice that the person whom you thought has the high amount of money don't even have anything.
Nobody wants to look like a failure. Imagine someone who has been working for years and finally get enough money to buy something that is very expensive. The next thing is to show it off.
I've also come to understand that the poorest of people whenever their hands touch the highest amount of money they can ever touch at a particular time, they blow overboard. Immediately they want to show the world. Immediately they want to pump everywhere.
You buy the expensive phone, then the expensive clothes, cars, apartment, vacation and before you know it, almost all the money that you have with yourself is gone. And if you've already continued on this spending spree, you might not be able to post whatever you are doing. You will just enter debt all because you want to look rich.
But when you flip this table, you start to understand that there are some people that are not using the latest car, they are not using the latest wrist watch or anything luxurious but their financial life is actually stable and is stronger than the flamboyant Instagram kind of guy. They don't need anything to prove to anyone and that is the kind of financial life that I would prefer. For me, I would rather have an emergency fund than a car that I cannot comfortably maintain.
I would rather have useful skill and investment that spends everything trying to impress people who don't even know who I am. Because when you start to look at everything now, you come to understand that the performance easily becomes exhausting and this is where social media is very dangerous. Immediately you see someone that is living the la vida loca kind of a lifestyle.
You don't need to be jealous or look up to that person. The best thing is to keep grinding at your own time and you will surely get there. The best thing is to keep building something that becomes stronger with time.
To me, that is the best way to build wealth, not necessarily the loudest car or the biggest watch. If I ever have to choose between looking wealthy and actually being financially comfortable, being financially comfortable would be my best choice at all times without even thinking twice.
