How you present yourself to a person or people for the first time matters a lot. This is why people tend to look presentable in the best way possible when they'll be meeting with someone new. Be it a date, a business meeting, a formal engagement and so on. It's the case of first impressions. Why? Because what you present yourself as in the first meeting or what you're perceived as usually and easily remains etched in people's minds.
First impressions can instantly bring conclusions about a person. People have been rejected and ignored because of a bad first impression. I think it's also important to mention that the issue of first impression goes beyond physical interactions, but even that which happens virtually and online. It seems to be trickier there. I've heard of a person losing out on a job opportunity because of how they conducted themself during the live interview session.

However, people can get it wrong by making conclusions based on first impressions. A person could be having a bad day and it doesn't reflect who they really are. I watched a movie where a young man was scheduled for an interview, and being new to the location he didn't know he had to leave hours earlier to avoid traffic and make it on time. It affected his opportunity of getting the job. Thankfully, something worked out as he was given another chance.
Sadly, not many will get another chance ruined by a bad first impression. When it comes to official and life-defining matters, people rarely give a chance after a negative first impression. There are many seeking that opportunity or it might be too delicate to go ahead with such a person based on the impression gotten. We can't really blame people sometimes, though they might get it wrong. But then, this affects the person who didn't put up a good first impression.
This is why it's important to try by all means to put up a good first impression. We should try the best we can, to avoid hoping for second chances to prove ourselves that might never come. How does one put up a good first impression? Be courteous, punctual, look clean, decent and responsible, be mindful of language usage, have self-coordination, present oneself with decorum, be respectful, know why you're there and whatever important details.
The above-mentioned and more should be helpful for a good first impression. Mind you, it shouldn't be about deceiving and being corny. The truth always gets out. While we should learn to put up a good first impression, we should also strive to develop the values and character that help to make a good first impression.
