Saludos comunidad @holos.lotus

Greetings, community. @holos.lotus

There are phrases that seem to haunt us with the tenacity of a refrain—not the great slogans, but those spoken in an undertone within family circles, during a break at work, or in those comments we overhear as we pass through our streets and plazas. Some have even accompanied us since childhood: the pronouncement that "any time past was better," or another one well-worn in these parts, such as "youth today is lost." It is almost surprising how easily they impose themselves, as if they needed no proof—and yet, they are much more fragile than they appear.

The complaint is not new. If you dig a little into history, we will find versions of this lament in almost every era. It is said that since classical antiquity, young people were accused of answering back, of loving luxury, of not respecting their elders. In fact, it is very likely that our parents and grandparents were also accused of the same thing. If in every century it has been said that today's youth are worse than those of yesterday, perhaps we are not describing youth itself, but rather repeating a mental reflex.

This reflex feeds on very intimate emotions, such as nostalgia, pride, and the fear of time passing. The past gives us back an image of ourselves, where we remember what we were with a mixture of tenderness and condescension, and we tend to forget our stumbles, our doubts, and our irresponsibilities. Memory, after all, acts as a sort of narrator with its own agenda, smoothing out the rough edges, editing the details, and turning the mediocre into something valuable. Perhaps when we say that everything was better before, we are not fairly comparing two eras; rather, we are comparing an era lived from within with a foreign era seen from the outside.

He who defines himself as hardworking will say that they do not make an effort; he who defines himself as respectful will say that they have lost their values. But the point of reference is not youth as a category, but one's own biography, turning personal trajectories into a norm—where anyone who does not resemble us ends up on the side of defect. It may be that when we look back, we see ourselves as we like to tell our story: more diligent and more aware—memory grants us an alibi, after all. A young person today is not being shaped in the same world as the one of yesterday. Many things have changed: ways of reading, of working, of relating to others, of paying attention, of loving, of protesting. It is not possible to evaluate their conduct with categories from another time, as if circumstances were merely an accessory.

Today we are living through an unprecedented amplification of this phenomenon. Social media give a megaphone to generational grievance, and what used to stay within a more closed circle now circulates as a video, a meme, or an opinion disguised as statistics. Some of these observations describe real changes; what they do not describe is a moral or intellectual inferiority of an entire generation. The reality is much more complex and less flattering for those who pass judgment.

Societies that belittle their young may well be condemning themselves to bitterness and conflict, but those that listen to them will be able to understand their conditions and their ways of being in the world, opening themselves up to renewal. It is fair to judge them with the same rigor and compassion that we would have liked to receive when we were young. It is very likely that, deep down, we too were once looked at with distrust.

Today's youth inherit a world full of broken promises and unprecedented possibilities. They deserve an unclouded gaze—acknowledging that the past was not better, that the present is not necessarily worse, and that the yardstick with which we measure others always says more about us than about them.
