Saludos comunidad.

Greetings, community.

It is comforting to return to those novels that aim to be nothing more than a good adventure story. Bellarion by Rafael Sabatini is exactly that: a chivalric novel set in Renaissance Italy that does not aspire to revolutionize literature, but to entertain with skill, blending history and adventure.

This story brings us a young orphan, raised within the walls of a convent, who, upon coming of age, moves to the city to continue his studies; destiny has another path in store for him: a false accusation, a desperate flight, and an unexpected refuge in the gardens of a palace, where he meets Princess Valeria, who, through a fortunate misunderstanding, decides to hide him from those pursuing him. That encounter will mark the beginning of a relationship that will move between intrigues, debts of honor, and a love that resists declaring itself.

One of the things I liked most about this novel is that Bellarion is not the typical hero, but an intelligent young man with a strategic mind that he turns into his true weapon; instead of imposing himself by force, he does so through cunning, making his way in a hostile world, which makes him a much more interesting protagonist than conventional warriors.

The historical context is very well crafted: the writer places his hero in fifteenth-century Italy, at a time of struggles among republics, principalities, and papal power, and has him rub shoulders with real figures of the era, since many of the secondary characters actually existed, which is a welcome touch; within a historical setting that breathes and lends weight to the protagonist’s adventures. There are some moments when the plot drags a little, and even the occasional faintly drawn secondary character, but that does not prevent the reader from enjoying it; the author writes with agile and elegant prose, pacing action, intrigue, and romance, making the story easy to read.

Bellarion can be an ideal read for an unhurried afternoon, for anyone who enjoys adventure novels with a historical background and does not mind that the hero is more clever than brave; it is not Sabatini’s most famous work, but it has everything that makes his writing enjoyable: adventure, history, romance, and a touch of irony that brings us closer to his heroes and makes them feel so near; this could be the gateway to an author who is still worth reading.
