At Risingstar School, the hallways were filled with dreams, where each student sought their own sound, the one that would one day make them stand out from the crowd. Elise and Nick worked together. She was a disciplined guitarist, and he was a singer with a warm voice that could adapt to any style. They weren't the most striking, but their musical connection was real, and that was enough. Everything changed the day Elise bought a secondhand guitar.
The instrument was unattractive, the wood showing the wear and tear of time and the finish had lost its luster. Moreover, from the very first moment, the sound was different, as the notes came out with an unusual depth, with a resonance that seemed to fill the space even before the chord ended. It wasn't just good; it had character.
The first rehearsals with Nick went very well. The music flowed with a naturalness they had never experienced before, with cleaner transitions and more precise changes. But as the hours passed, a strange feeling began to creep in: the guitar seemed to anticipate Elise's decisions, which frightened them greatly, as her hands changed position before she had even thought about it.
At first, she thought it was simply a memory lapse. However, as the days went by, the movements became very precise, fast, as if the instrument were guiding the process rather than responding to it. Nick also began to notice changes; his voice and some notes came out with a strength he didn't know he had, and others were sustained beyond his usual capacity. At the end of each rehearsal, he was left with a strange feeling: the result was better than ever, but the effort left them completely exhausted.
Both noticed something strange: inside the body of the guitar was a barely visible name, that of a guitarist who had been very famous years ago, but whose career ended with a traffic accident during a tour. Many said that this guitarist was known for his extreme obsession with perfection and his constant desire for recognition, and since then, his instrument had disappeared.
After learning about this very sad story, Elise decided to stop using the guitar. She tried for several days, but every rehearsal without it seemed incomplete. When she picked up the guitar again, she felt the same sonic presence, the same immediate response, as if the instrument had been waiting. It was then that the control ceased to be subtle, her hands began to move differently, performing movements that Elise had not studied. The music became more complex and more demanding. Nick, following her, felt his voice adjusting to an intensity he did not master. It was not just technical improvement; it was a performance that neither of them had decided on.
Each rehearsal left them more tired, but it sounded better and better. Until, amid that uncertainty, the final Risingstar performance arrived. The stage represented the opportunity they had been looking for, but also the feeling that something was no longer up to them. The guitar began to play, the music took on a life of its own, the chords flowed, the execution was flawless, the voice was very loud and dark at the same time. The audience responded with immediate enthusiasm, and it was the best performance of their lives.
But when they finished, the feeling was not one of accomplishment. Elise could barely remember a few fragments, her hands hurt as if she had played for hours without rest, and Nick's throat felt tight, as if he had pushed his voice beyond its limits. Where recognition finally came, but with it came a disturbing certainty: the more successful they became, the less they felt that the music belonged to them, since the guitar had not improved their talent, but had found new hands.
