Happy and blessed day

ENGLISH

Hi, friends! As part of our week dedicated to The Four Agreements, at the Talent Gathering, our friend @angelica7 invites us to reflect on the second agreement, which is about not taking anything personally. It’s a very famous book that has helped us a lot on a personal level and has given us much food for thought.

Often, our daily suffering stems largely from the way we interpret what other people say or do to us. In other words, when someone responds to us reluctantly, doesn’t return our greeting, or criticizes us, our natural tendency is to assume that there’s something wrong with us or that there’s a deliberate intention to hurt us.

However, not everything others do is directed against us. Sometimes, people who are trapped in their own minds and who struggle with their inner world at every moment—just like everyone else—give free rein to what’s inside them, and many of us simply act the way we are. Although this isn’t always the case, we shouldn’t justify mistreatment; rather, what we should do is free ourselves and let go of those emotions that don’t belong to us. As long as we haven’t provoked it ourselves, we don’t need to worry, since they’re simply behaving that way, and that’s why we can’t give it the importance it deserves. What we need to do is set boundaries and move on with our lives.

That’s why, over time, I came to understand that most of the time, people act based on what’s inside them, not on who you are. There are those who are rude because they’re frustrated, people who hurt others because they’re hurting, people who criticize because they feel inferior, and others who pull away because they simply don’t know how to maintain connections—and that doesn’t always have anything to do with us.

So today I stopped carrying burdens that don’t even belong to me, because when we take everything so personally, we live in constant anxiety—everything hurts us, and everything feels like rejection. If someone treats us badly, speaks harshly to us, or acts strangely and is very curt with us, that doesn’t mean I’m worth less; sometimes what they do comes from within them.

And growing up emotionally also means accepting and acknowledging that this says more about them than it does about you. Honestly, ever since I started thinking this way, my life has become so much lighter because I no longer feel the need to defend myself against everything—I don’t need to be liked by everyone, and I definitely don’t let just any comment affect my life. And honestly, this mindset I’m using today has given me so much peace.

So lately I haven’t been taking anything personally, and that has brought me a lot of peace, since I don’t let my emotions be dictated by the moods or opinions of the people around me. Now I find it easier to be understanding and communicative. That’s why taking things personally is like taking on a burden that never belonged to you. No one does anything to you; people simply do things, and you decide whether to let them affect you or let them go.
