Deutschland setzte bzw. verkaufte 2024 insgesamt rund 813 Tonnen SF₆.

How harmful are wind turbines to the climate?

When it comes to wind power, the discussion often focuses solely on CO₂. However, there are other greenhouse gases – and one of them is SF₆ (sulfur hexafluoride).

SF₆ is used, among other things, as an insulating and extinguishing gas in electrical switchgear. Such switchgear is also found in the vicinity of wind turbines.

What's special about SF₆:

It has an extremely high global warming potential.

Depending on the assessment method, 1 kg of SF₆ roughly corresponds to 24 tons of CO₂ over 100 years.

In 2024, Germany produced or sold a total of approximately 813 tons of SF₆.

This amount is theoretically equivalent to roughly 19 million tons of CO₂ equivalents.

However, a word of caution: This does NOT mean that wind turbines emitted 19 million tons of CO₂. The 813 tons do not automatically represent the actual amount released into the atmosphere. Leaks, maintenance, and the disposal of the switchgear are crucial factors.

Nevertheless, this example illustrates why, when considering the energy transition, it is essential to look not only at CO₂ but at all greenhouse gases and the entire life cycle of a technology.

For comparison:

Area | Approx. Emissions/Year
🟠 SF₆ Germany – 813 t (calculated) | 19 million t CO₂e

✈️ Air Traffic Germany | ~30 million tons of CO₂e

₿ Bitcoin worldwide | ~40 million tons of CO₂e

🚗 Passenger cars in Germany | ~86 million tons of CO₂e

🏠 Building sector in Germany | ~100 million tons of CO₂e

🚛 Road traffic in Germany | ~140 million tons of CO₂e

These figures are orders of magnitude and partly estimates; in particular, SF₆ represents the calculated CO₂ equivalent of the total amount, not actual, proven emissions.

My conclusion

I am absolutely not against wind turbines. They can certainly contribute to reducing our dependence on oil and gas in the energy sector.

However, I am against the Greens' plan to clear our forests to install wind turbines so that we can then use the generated electricity to power air conditioning in our major cities.

Because forests significantly cool their surroundings through shade and evaporation – under certain conditions, by as much as 15 degrees Celsius.

I'm in favor of wind power.

I'm in favor of an independent energy supply.

But perhaps we shouldn't view forests as a climate problem when they are, in fact, part of the solution.

However, in my opinion, there is no truly environmentally friendly technology. So we should start looking beyond the obvious and consider the bigger picture as well!
