Circle is making Bitcoin usable as collateral for institutional clients. Eligible Circle Mint customers can deposit BTC, mint cirBTC against it, and then use that position to borrow USDC via connected lending markets—without having to sell their Bitcoin. At launch, the model operates via Arc and Ethereum.

Circle itself does not issue the loan; interest rates, collateral requirements, and liquidation thresholds are determined by the respective DeFi protocol. The positions are over-collateralized and managed through a wallet controlled by the customer.

This solves a practical problem for large Bitcoin holders. Previously, anyone needing short-term liquidity often had to sell their BTC or coordinate across multiple platforms. With this new model, institutional clients can retain their Bitcoin holdings while still obtaining USDC.

cirBTC is fully backed by Bitcoin and was launched by Circle on Ethereum back in June. With its added availability on Arc, the aim is to integrate Bitcoin more deeply into on-chain lending markets, particularly for professional market participants.

My personal takeaway:

I believe that more and more crypto companies—and even banks—will develop similar offerings in the future. For you as a retail investor, this means accumulating Bitcoin and useful altcoins now, as well as in 2027 and 2028. In the near future, you won't need to sell your cryptocurrencies; instead, you'll be able to lend them out in exchange for stablecoins to generate liquidity. I am currently using my favorite platform and am already earning 8% interest on Bitcoin and as much as 12% on stablecoins.
