The tenth episode of Firefly marked the first significant reappearance of a recurring antagonist in the series. The cold open features both Shepherd Book and the episode's main villain, Adelei Niska (played by Michael Fairman in guest starring role), quoting the words of the eloquent yet sadistic warlord Shan Yu. This indirect introduction re-introduces Niska as a powerful and vicious crime lord who feels wronged by the actions of Serenity's crew in the earlier episode, The Train Job.

The plot picks up immediately after the events of Ariel, with Serenity's financial situation improved thanks to the successful raid that netted medical supplies, valuable in Outer planets. However, this newfound stability leads Wash to focus on the problems in his marriage to Zoe, whom he sees as too subservient to Mal due to their shared history from the Unification War. Wash's jealousy causes him to insist on accompanying Mal on the supply run, which turns out to be a trap set by Niska.

The episode is structured into three distinct segments, with varying levels of quality. The first part, featuring war stories and Inara servicing a glamorous lesbian client, played by Katherine Kendall in guest starring role, is slow and not particularly engaging. This subplot, while attempting to show Firefly'as socially progressive, comes across as more akin to "lipstick lesbianism" catering to a male audience.

The second part, showcasing Mal and Wash's captivity and torture by Niska, is the strongest section of the episode. The darkly humorous banter between the two men as they endure their ordeal sets a compelling tone.

The final segment, which depicts Serenity's crew mounting a daring rescue mission to save Mal, is somewhat mechanical and poorly directed. The script by Cheryl Cain attempts to explore how various crew members, such as Book and Simon, would handle themselves in combat, but this opportunity is not fully realized due to the subpar direction by James Cortner. The one exception is the character of River and her apparent marksmanship skills, which would be further explored in later episodes and subsequent feature film.

Despite its flaws, War Stories is elevated by the strong performances, particularly Michael Fairman's portrayal of the formidable villain Niska . While a solid episode, it remains generally unremarkable within the overall Firefly canon .
