Our entire existence is useless if, in the end, our only achievements are our personal goals. Service to humanity is everyone's calling, and that's where purpose lies, but it must come from a personal willingness.
We have seen people who claim to be called to serve humanity end up using the privilege given to them to extort money and corner opportunities for their selfish interests.
It's high time we draw the line: if someone is not ready to serve humanity, don't force them simply because they seem to have the qualities and resources, without the zeal and willingness to work, work done is equal to nothing.
I completely respect the government’s idea of having every graduate who passed through the University serve the nation for a year before starting something for themselves.
Ideally, we ought to serve our community; if we don't, who will? It's just quite unfortunate that some of our countries have gone so bad that people see it as a waste of effort to render services to it.
However, we must also understand that our service is to mankind and not to the government.
But I think it's a little too far when students are forced to serve the society before their graduation and failure to do so would cause forfeiting of graduation.
The question I'd like to put first is will the students be given a reasonable stipend during this service? If yes, I can say they have a measure of peace, but if the answer is no, then honestly, that's wickedness of the highest order.
Forget the fact that they're students; they have a life to live. Some of them have responsibilities; the time they will dedicate to doing free work for the government can be used to build skills or engage in work that would improve their lives.
Serving the country is not supposed to be a compulsory affair; people are to choose whether to serve or not.
Compelling people to do something they do not have intentions to do, makes us have people who take for granted the privilege given to them.
Sometimes, even when they are being motivated with a stipend, they still take the job for granted, go to villages and see some of those people serving the government; some don't even go to their place of primary assignment until they hear that supervisors are coming.
This is because the passion is not there; the only time we can avoid all these is when these things are made open for people to decide whether to do or not.
I am certain that even if nothing is given as a reward, there are people who would serve wholeheartedly.

Whether or not people are made to serve compulsorily, those who would be responsible citizens, knowing the relevance of service to others before themselves would be, and those who don't want to be responsible will not be.
However, every citizen should know that one of the best ways to contribute to building our government is by rendering services to our communities regardless of whether there would be any benefit or not.
