En lo que han sido unos días bastante movidos en mi natal Venezuela, no faltó un espacio para tomarme un pequeño descanso, para ver algo distinto a lo que quizás el mundo deportivo tiene puesta ahora su mirada, que son los juegos Olímpicos que se están llevando a cabo en la ciudad de París Francia. En mi búsqueda por estar al pendiente también del béisbol de las grandes ligas, me he encontrado una entrevista que le han hecho al ex pelotero cubano Rafael Palmeiro, grata la sorpresa para mí, porque fue realizada por un par de periodistas Dominicanos muy famosos, que me han hecho revivir lo grandioso de una época.
La década de los años 90' en MLB, fue un tiempo muy cuestionado, un periodo marcado por el uso de sustancias prohibidas, que ayudaron a muchos peloteros, a implementar marcas y registros personales, que han sido muy difíciles de superar, pero en el caso del bateador zurdo cubano, hay que meterle el ojo, pues sus números están dentro de los estándares normales, y se diferencia mucho a los que si sobresalieron en demasía, abriendo una oportunidad para estudiar sus actuaciones, que a pesar de que si dio positivo, en lo particular pienso, eso no influyó en el resultado final de su desempeño.

In my quest to also be aware of major league baseball, I have found an interview with former Cuban baseball player Rafael Palmeiro, a pleasant surprise for me, because it was conducted by a couple of very famous Dominican journalists, who have made me relive the greatness of an era.
The decade of the 90's in the MLB, was a very questioned time, a period marked by the use of banned substances, which helped many players, to implement brands and personal records, which have been very difficult to overcome, but in the case of the Cuban left-handed hitter, you have to put the eye, because his numbers are within the normal standards, and he is very different from those who excelled too much, opening an opportunity to study his performances, and although he did test positive, in my opinion, this did not influence the final result of his performance.

Yo creo que al igual que los de mi época, los 90' y por ser nosotros bateadores derechos (aficionados), deseamos ser en algún momento como los bateadores zurdos, Ken Griffey Jr. y Rafael Palmeiro, ellos tenían una naturalidad a la hora de batear, que era muy diferente al resto, sus conexiones eran fuertes y muy bien dirigidas, a diferencia de otros y a los del tiempo actual, que el bateador busca más el cuadrangular y hacer swing fuerte, descuidado otros departamentos importantes como, el doble o las carreras impulsadas, cosa que esos dos, las materializaban, y muy bien.
Cuando vemos sus números en cuanto a cuadrangulares, no eran como los de Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa y Mark McGwire, estos jugadores en mención, superaron los 60 jonrones en varias ocasiones, unas cantidades muy llamativas, que a diferencia de Rafael Palmeiro, los batazos de vuelta completa del antillano, estaban dentro de los parámetros normales, que eran entre 25, 30 y hasta 40 bambinazos por temporada, y cuyas distancias recorridas, también estaban dentro de lo que comúnmente se le conoce en el béisbol, el promedio dentro de los bateadores de fuerza.

Lo más destacado de este bateador cubano y que es digno de admirar, es que es un tipo de una personalidad muy tranquila y que fue muy consistente, esa fue la clave de su éxito y que lo llevó a obtener más de 3000 indiscutibles y más de 500 cuadrangulares, además de una alta suma de dobles en las grandes ligas, que lo colocan entre los más grandes bateadores no solamente de su época, sino de toda la historia de este juego. Cosechó 9 temporadas de manera consecutiva con al menos 30 cuadrangulares y 100 carreras impulsadas, siendo uno de los pocos en lograrlo en un universo de peloteros que se ha perdido de vista.
Yo me siento orgulloso de no solo ver triunfar a los peloteros venezolanos y latinoamericanos, sino que también los he visto iniciar y culminar sus carreras profesionales, que los han llevado directo al salón de la fama. Si bien Palmeiro no logro entrar, por las causas que ya todos sabemos, sus números están allí, y no los podrán borrar, fue un tipo que fue hasta el Congreso de los Estados Unidos a dar la cara, y que años después luego de varias entrevistas podemos decir, que ha sido un pelotero que no parece haberse aprovechado de tales sustancias, y que hubo muchas cosas con respecto a sus pruebas doping, que no quedaron muy claras.
The most outstanding thing about this Cuban hitter is that he is a guy with a very calm personality and was very consistent, that was the key to his success and that led him to obtain more than 3000 hits and more than 500 home runs in addition to a high number of doubles in the big leagues, which place him among the greatest hitters not only of his time but of the entire history of this game. He had 9 consecutive seasons with at least 30 homers and 100 RBIs, being one of the few to achieve this in a universe of players that has been lost from sight.
I am proud to not only see Venezuelan and Latin American baseball players succeed, but I have also seen them start and finish their professional careers, which have taken them straight to the Hall of Fame. Although Palmeiro did not get in, for reasons that we all know, his numbers are there, and they will not be erased, he was a guy who went to the U.S. Congress to show his face, and years later after several interviews we can say that he has been a player who does not seem to have taken advantage of such substances and that there were many things regarding his doping tests, which were not very clear.
