We’ve all heard our fair share of old sayings about death, but our absolute favorite has to be: "Death is so confident in its victory that it gives us a lifetime’s head start." Now, real talk: we usually hit the club pool at that sweet spot during the workweek when almost nobody’s around—we’re talking that 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. window. The perks? Honestly, nothing beats swimming in a crystal-clear pool with zero people "accidentally" drifting into your lane, plus just enough peace and quiet to brain-dump and create without any interruptions. That said, last Tuesday as I was wrapping up my session, this dad rolls up with his two kiddos ready to splash around. As we headed toward the locker rooms, the guy looks at me and goes, "Hey, do you usually swim in the mornings?" I nodded, and he followed up with, "Can anyone actually jump in and train before noon?" I told him the pool opens up to the public starting at 11:00 a.m. sharp, and that was that—we said our goodbyes and went our separate ways.

We all need a catalyst in life, whether it’s an external push or a mind game we play with ourselves. For this writer, it’s always been my toxic trait: an unapologetic competitive streak that, frankly, can be pretty insufferable for anyone else around. The only difference now is that, unlike back in the day, experience has taught me how to mask it and tone it down. Yesterday, right as I finished warming up and was about to dive into the pool, I saw the guy from Tuesday walking out of the locker room. I gave him a nod, and we got down to business. I always claim the center lane, so my "motivator" had no choice but to take the one on my left. The second he started swimming, my brain immediately went: "No way in hell am I letting this guy catch up," and I pushed myself to the absolute limit. He’s a young dude, so I figured he’d catch me no matter how much hustle I brought to the table. But spoiler alert: it didn't happen. It turns out the kid didn't have the conditioning I’ve built up. Not only that, but he threw in the towel and bailed from the pool long before I was even done. I can't lie, a sweet little rush of satisfaction washed all over me.

I was still riding that high when I finally climbed out of the pool. In that exact moment as I was heading over to the table to grab my gear, the kid got up from his chair to jump back in, but not before dropping this line: "Sir, you go incredibly hard." Total music to my ears, but that heavy dose of respect in his voice completely killed my competitive ego. I walked toward the showers overanalyzing my attitude and hit the exact same conclusion women have known about guys for generations: "We are literally just big toddlers." I got into the club locker room and started unpacking my bag to clean up. The floor was slick as ice, and trust me, I am nowhere near the epitome of physical coordination. Our flip-flops completely lost their grip on a puddle we didn't see coming, and guess what? We were headed straight for the floor when, by some miracle, our reflexes kicked in just in time to stop the fall. And believe it or not, my temple actually brushed the sharp edge of the built-in ceramic bench, but thanks to that last-second brake, I didn't even slam into it.

It’s safe to say we dodged a massive bullet by a total miracle. Honestly, I can only imagine a heavy blow to the temple is as lethal as a gunshot—I would've been left stone-dead right then and there. The scare was so intense that we ended up just sitting on that bench for a good while, catching our breath from the workout and trying to regain our composure from the pure adrenaline and fear of what just happened. "Death is so confident in its victory..." started echoing inside our head like a broken record while we changed into our clothes. We cleaned ourselves up, threw on our shades, and with our dignity looking like swiss cheese, we headed out to the parking lot to grab the wheel and drive back home. I picture a different outcome in that locker room and see my "motivator" walking in only to find the lifeless body of a guy in his sixties, raising the alarm and muttering to the paramedics: "Man, that dude used to go so hard in the pool."
