In the entire history of baseball, flashin' the leather hasn't been valued as much as it is in today's game. At the end of the day, if you can't flash the glove and record the outs, it doesn't matter how much firepower you have in the lineup, it won't mean a thing. There's nothing more ruthless than the final out, because that exact moment tells you the ballgame is history. Before that, any squad still breathin' can mount a comeback. That being said, the 2026 Rawlings Gold Glove Award winners for the recently concluded season were announced the other day. That hardware was born to reward the best of the best taking care of business on the field at every position in both leagues. Four seasons ago, the latest one was created, which goes to the top utility guy in each league to reward a player who can play all over the diamond. With that in mind and considering the 9 first-time winners, we'll focus on the Venezuelan big leaguers who brought one home.

For the first time ever, the Senior Circuit featured three Venezuelan finalists behind the dish: Gabriel Moreno (Diamondbacks), Luis Torrens (Mets), and Freddy Fermín (Padres). That speaks volumes about the home-grown Venezuelan talent holding down that spot on the diamond. Check this out: the World Series champ and MVP, William Contreras, didn't even make the cut. The ballot is handled by coaches, managers, and baseball insiders. Well, Gabriel Moreno locked it up thanks to his elite metrics in blocks (+5), caught stealing above average (+3), and runs saved via pitch framing (+5). On top of that, he becomes only the second backstop in MLB history to take home a Gold Glove and a batting title in the exact same year. The other guy? Hall of Famer Joe Mauer back in '08 and '09. To cap it all off, he added the Luis Aparicio Award to his trophy case, recognizing him as the top-performing Venezuelan big leaguer of the 2026 MLB season.

Chourio.jpg

Over in left field for the National League, another Venezuelan phenom who seems to have cleaned house took home the hardware as the best glove at his position: Jackson Chourio. And maybe nothing sums up his defensive campaign quite like that layout diving catch in Game 5 of the World Series on an opposite-field slice from Taylor Walls. You need off-the-charts athleticism and pure instinct to make a web gem of that caliber. First off, because it's a left-handed hitter spraying it to left, and to top it off, the ball was slicing toward the foul line. His Gold Glove run came after leading all NL left fielders with 13 Defensive Runs Saved on catches and 8 Outfield Arm Runs resulting in outs. And the man hasn't even blown out 23 candles yet, so just imagine the ceiling for this kid, who just racked up his third straight season with double digits in swiped bags (23) and big flies (25). That milestone makes him the first player in MLB history to put up 20-20 numbers in three seasons before turning 23. His potential is completely off the charts.

Last but definitely not least, the final Venezuelan to strike gold was the American League right fielder, the Maracaibo native holding it down for the Boston Red Sox, Wilyer Abreu. The man has become the absolute blueprint for flashing leather out there, locking up his third consecutive Gold Glove. And that's no small feat. We're talking about the guy who led the entire Big Leagues at any position with a mind-boggling 28 Defensive Runs Saved. On top of that, he gunned down 13 baserunners for outfield assists, trailing only the 14 runners caught by Cuban outfielder Andy Pagés of the Dodgers. Wilyer also kept postseason hopes alive by putting the Sox on his back alongside fellow Venezuelan Willson Contreras during that now-legendary divisional comeback when Boston's season looked completely dead in the water. They ultimately punched their ticket to October, only to get swept by the Yankees. There you have it, three more Gold Gloves for the Venezuelan trophy case.
