Let’s be real, the Tampa Bay Rays followed [the script](https://peakd.com/hive-189157/@fermionico/world-series-desenlace-inesperado-espeng-opinion-kai) I drew up before the start of the 122nd MLB World Series between them and the Milwaukee Brewers. But it wasn't enough. We said a major key was to ambush the Brewers' starting pitchers early, knowing full well how lockdown their bullpen is. And yeah, they jumped all over Logan Henderson for a four-spot in the very first frame of Game 2, leaving the Brew Crew dugout looking a bit long-faced. Just a bit? Yeah. The reason? A squad that never gets down, especially with 7 of their 8 postseason wins coming via the comeback (2 against the Friars, 4 against the Blue Crew, and yesterday’s against the Rays). That kind of heart makes a club practically unkillable. If you don't believe it, just ask the Rays, who have played clean baseball and made them fight tooth and nail for both wins.

What were the keys to the ballgame? After a shaky start in the opening frame, Logan locked it down and tossed the next two innings without giving up much, leaving the game with the scoreboard still manageable at 4-2. And you know what the high-leverage arms in the bullpen did? They worked out of some jams but scattered just 4 more hits over 6 full frames, including a heart-stopping ninth. But it was the offense, chipping away run by run, that manufactured the epic comeback these Brew Crew boys always pull off. Venezuelan backstop William Contreras came through again in the bottom of the first, slapping an RBI single to center with two ducks on the pond to put the Brewers on the board. Garrett Mitchell followed with another RBI knock, making the comeback feel inevitable. When a squad can punch right back after a four-run rally, it sends a jolt of life straight through the dugout.

Why do we say it? Because of Sal Frelick. A lefty who, in 98 plate appearances against southpaws, only managed to leave the yard once during the regular season. Want to guess when he did it for the second time? Last night, to knot things up in the bottom of the sixth. American Family Field is a dome, so the crowd noise went absolutely off the charts when they saw the ball clear the fence. And then? A rookie shortstop. Cooper Pratt looked like he’d been scripting a moment like last night’s his whole life, ripping a clutch RBI single to drive in the game-winner. With that knock, he became the second-youngest player in history (22 years and 67 days old) to drive in a run and swipe a bag in the Fall Classic since stolen bases became an official stat in 1920. With a squad this young and loaded with talent, we don't see how Milwaukee doesn't turn into a bona fide dynasty.

And one factor that few have picked up on might have flipped the script for the Rays. The only catch: it falls right into the territory of what-ifs. What would the scoreboard look like if Kevin Cash had decided to hand the ball to Drew Rasmussen instead of Nick Martinez for Game 1? I mean, come on! It’s the Fall Classic. A skipper's job is to go down swinging with their absolute best arms, and maybe Cash figured it wasn't worth burning Rasmussen against a lockdown Jacob Misiorowski. But the gamble blew up in his face. Not only did he take the L with Martinez, but his bet on Rasmussen to take Game 2 completely backfired. Now his squad is heading back to Florida down 0-2 and backed into a corner, and you know what history says when a team jumps out to that kind of lead in the World Series? They finish the job and take home the crown 80.1% of the time. No, the Rays haven't played bad baseball. It’s just that the Brew Crew has outclassed them. This story picks right back up for Game 3 tomorrow, Monday night.
