No importó que fuera Freddy Peralta el lanzador abridor de los Rays con 16 innings y dos tercios lanzados y efectividad de 1.08 en ésta postemporada, antes de enfrentar a la peligrosa batería de los Cerveceros de Milwaukee, en el tercer juego de la CXXII Serie Mundial de baseball escenificado en el Tropicana Field de la ciudad floridana. Ni siquiera importó el espectacular engarce de Chandler Simpson a batazo de Sal Frelick contra la pared del jardín izquierdo, en el segundo capítulo que acá y en cualquier lugar, levantaría el ánimo de un equipo.      It didn't matter that Freddy Peralta was on the bump for the Rays with 16.2 frames cooked and a 1.08 ERA in this postseason before staring down the Brewers' dangerous lineup in Game 3 of the 122nd World Series at the Trop. It didn't even matter that Chandler Simpson robbed Sal Frelick with a spectacular web gem against the left-field wall in the second inning that anywhere else would have sparked any dugout. The Rays ran into a harsh reality: these Brew Crew boys are locked in to bring the crown back to Milwaukee and they are looking to sweep today in Game 4 even on the road. For the Rays, it's a do-or-die game where they'll have to fight the analytics: 43 times a team has jumped to a 3-0 hole in the Fall Classic, and 42 times that team couldn't stop the opposition from hoisting the Commissioner's Trophy.      Y ¿qué hicieron mal los Rays? Bueno, volvieron a caer en errores y además volvieron a regalar outs. ¿El out regalado más importante? La rola de William Contreras a Caminero en el quinto, la cual ha debido terminar el inning, pero por alguna razón el tiro no llegó a tiempo y todo el mundo quedó quieto. Bases llenas con dos outs. Y el béisbol castiga demasiado cuando usted no hace las pequeñas jugadas. A continuación, la demostración ofensiva de los lupulosos quedó para la historia: siete imparables consecutivos impulsores de ocho carreras entregaron un episodio donde el marcador 10 a cero parecía irremontable. Y así fue. Los Rays sólo pudieron descontar una en el noveno y eso porque enfrentaron a Brandon Woodruff quien recién fue reincorporado de la lista de lesionados y no había lanzado una pelota desde abril de este año.       And what did the Rays mess up? Well, they booted it again and kept giving away free outs. The biggest blown out? William Contreras's grounder to Caminero in the fifth, which should’ve ended the frame, but for some reason the throw didn't make it in time and everyone was safe. Ducks on the pond with two outs. And baseball absolutely burns you when you don't make the routine plays. Right after that, the Brew Crew’s offense put on a historic clinic: seven straight knocks driving in eight runs cooked up an inning where the 10-0 score felt impossible to climb out of. And it was. The Rays could only scratch across one in the ninth and that’s only because they faced Brandon Woodruff, who just came off the IL and hadn't thrown a live ball since April. On top of that ruthless offensive onslaught, there were two other keys that helped clear the path to the W.

     Robert Gasser abrió desde la lomita de Milwaukee y lanzó primores hacia la goma. Seis ceros de un solo imparable, una base por bolas y tres guillotinados fue suficiente para colocarse al lado de Cy Young como los dos únicos lanzadores en realizar tal proeza en la historia de las series mundiales. Los brazos del bullpen terminaron la joya aceptando dos imparables más y una carrera, en otra hermética jornada de pitcheo. Así ¿cómo diablos se puede batear? La última clave: la defensa. Sal Frelick se metió una atrapada de película, arriesgando el físico con un marcador de 10 a 0 arriba. Sólo esa disposición dice mucho del espíritu y el hambre de estos lupulosos, quienes alrededor de segunda base han tejido jugadas de doble plays para detener cualquier vestigio de alzamiento. Es frustrante. No hay costura posible por donde colar una pelota cuando el equipo de enfrente juega una defensiva de esa manera. Así se pavimenta el camino de un campeón.

     Robert Gasser took the bump for Milwaukee and shoved completely. Six scoreless frames of one-hit ball, one free pass, and three punchouts was enough to put him right next to Cy Young as the only two pitchers to pull off that feat in Fall Classic history. The pen closed out the gem allowing just two more knocks and one run in another lights-out pitching performance. How the heck do you hit against that? The final key: defense. Sal Frelick made a web gem for the highlights, putting his body on the line even with a 10-0 lead. That hustle alone says everything about the grit and hunger of this Brew Crew, who have been turning double plays around the horn to crush any sign of a rally. It's frustrating. There's just no holes to sneak a ball through when the other squad plays defense like that. That’s how you pave the road to a ring.

     ¿Y el factor Venezuela? El jardinero Jackson Chourio se fue de 5-4 con un doble, una impulsada y una base robada. Se encargó de inflar una serie de registros históricos los cuales no encuentran cabida acá por lo limitado del espacio. Bueno, les diremos uno: se convirtió en el segundo hombre en la historia de las series mundiales en abrir la alineación y batear un hit en cada aparición de los tres primeros juegos del clásico de Octubre (el otro: Hank Bauer en 1958). El receptor William Contreras también impulsó una, se fue de 5-3 y reventó un intento de robo en segunda. El relevista criollo Antonio Senzatela tuvo una brillante actuación de un ponche en dos episodios completos sin aceptar imparables, luego de relevar a Gasser. Hoy podría terminar todo y para ello Griffin Jax tendrá la responsabilidad de no dejar morir a los Rays, mientras que los Cerveceros no han anunciado aún a un abridor, por lo que intuimos irán con un juego de bullpen. Los Cerveceros de Milwaukee tienen una cita con la historia y si la tendencia continúa, ese día podría ser hoy.

     And what about the Venezuela factor? Outfielder Jackson Chourio went 4-for-5 with a two-bagger, an RBI, and a swipe. He put up a ton of historic numbers that just won't fit here because we're running out of space. Well, we'll give you one: he became only the second leadoff hitter in Fall Classic history to record a knock in each of the first three games of the October Classic (the other being Hank Bauer in 1958). Backstop William Contreras also drove in one, going 3-for-5 and throwing out a runner trying to swipe second. Venezuelan reliever Antonio Senzatela tossed a gem, racking up one K across two perfect frames out of the pen after taking over for Gasser. It could all end today, and Griffin Jax has the ball with the job of keeping the Rays alive, while the Brewers haven't named a starter yet, so we're guessing it's a bullpen game. The Milwaukee Brewers have a date with destiny, and if the trend holds up, today could be the day.
