Recuerdo el segundo o tercer juego desde el debut de Jacob Misiorowski a mediados del año pasado, cuando le vimos por primera vez lanzando hacia la goma. Incluso creo recordar en mis crónicas, advertir sobre la presencia de un nuevo fenómeno en la lomita de Milwaukee y, por extensión, en la MLB. El tiempo simplemente nos dio la razón y ayer, en el primer partido de la Serie Mundial CXXII que enfrenta en el American Family Field a los Rays de Tampa Bay versus los Cerveceros de Milwaukee, el "Miz" rompió el récord de velocidad para un lanzamiento en esta instancia al registrar 103.5 MPH con una recta de 4 costuras a Yandy Díaz. Y ello sólo fue un abreboca de lo que vendría después. Todo el mundo sabe que la serie mundial se resolverá mediante marcadores de infarto y ambos equipos lo ratificaron: será el juego pequeño donde los detalles importan, el que decida quien será el nuevo campeón mundial. Y Venezuela tuvo mucha influencia en el resultado, pareciendo una extensión de la suerte que le acompañó en el WBC del mes de Marzo pasado. Veamos las claves.

     I remember Jacob Misiorowski’s second or third game since his call-up in the middle of last year, when we first saw him toe the rubber. I even think I recall warning in my columns about a new phenom on the Milwaukee bump and, by extension, in the Big Leagues. Time simply proved us right, and yesterday, in Game 1 of the 122nd World Series at American Family Field featuring the Tampa Bay Rays versus the Milwaukee Brewers, "The Miz" shattered the Fall Classic velocity record by pumping a 103.5 MPH four-seamer past Yandy Díaz. And that was just a teaser of what was to come. Everybody knows this World Series will be decided by nail-biters, and both clubs confirmed it: small ball and the little details will dictate who becomes the new world champ. Venezuela heavily influenced the outcome, looking like an extension of the hot streak that followed them in the WBC last March. Let's see the keys.

     En primer término, el brazo de Misiorowski funcionó y no pudo ser descifrado. Es verdad, permitió una carrera, pero esa rayita llegó cuando ya ganaban los Cerveceros por 2-0. Y ese marcador luce difícil para un equipo en desventaja versus Milwaukee, cuando ya está por entrar el relevo medio a encargarse. Fue en el 4to episodio, con un doble de Caminero y rolata de Liam Hicks. Ese fue todo el daño que le hicieron a Jacob. Con una base por bolas y 3 ponches, el "Miz" entregó el partido al bullpen al cerrar el inning 5. Con 4 imparables permitidos por el abridor de Milwaukee, la ofensiva cartilaginosa sólo pudo disparar 3 más enfrentando a Uribe, Ashby y Megill. Juego sellado. ¿Recuerdan ayer cuando hablamos sobre las claves de ésta serie mundial? Bueno, los Rays se poncharon 9 veces, una cantidad alta si se considera su historial. Son 9 outs de 27, un tercio del juego. Además se permitieron llegar en desventaja al momento de la transición entre el abridor y el bullpen. El niño que llora y la mamá que lo pellizca.

      First off, Misiorowski was shoving and they couldn't decode him. Sure, he coughed up a run, but that single tally came after the Brewers were already up 2-0. And that scoreboard looks like a mountain to climb for a trailing team against Milwaukee once the middle relief comes in to lock it down. It went down in the 4th frame, courtesy of a Caminero two-bagger and a groundout by Liam Hicks. That was all the damage they did to Jacob. With one free pass and 3 punchouts, "The Miz" handed the rock over to the bullpen after closing out the 5th inning. With 4 knocks allowed by the Milwaukee starter, the Rays' offense could only muster 3 more hits against Uribe, Ashby, and Megill. Ballgame. Remember yesterday when we talked about the keys to this World Series? Well, the Rays struck out 9 times, a high number considering their track record. That's 9 outs out of 27, a third of the game. Plus, they let themselves fall behind right at the bridge from the starter to the bullpen. They played right into their hands.

     Y por supuesto, está el sabor venezolano de una victoria 3-2, gravitando sobre el marcador final. El receptor criollo Willson Contreras no sólo guió el juego magistralmente detrás del home, sino que puso fuera de circulación a dos hombres de los Rays que intentaron robar bases. Además, se fue de 3-2 con una impulsada (la segunda rayita del marcador) y dos boletos. Con ello se convirtió en apenas el 4to. receptor de la historia y primero de éste siglo, en sacar al menos dos outs en las bases y tener un partido multihits en series mundiales. ¿Los otros? Thurman Munson (1976), Terry Kennedy (1984) y Joe Girardi (1999). Jackson Churio impulsó la carrera ganadora del juego en el séptimo episodio con un trallazo por la banda contraria, que se filtró entre la raya de cal y el primera base. Se fue de 4-2 con un ponche, pero volvió a ser el factor determinante de estos Cerveceros, quienes además entregaron un partido impecable a la defensiva, atrapando pelotas bien colocadas por los peligrosos bates de Tampa Bay.

     And of course, there's the Venezuelan flavor in a 3-2 victory, looming large over the final score. Venezuelan backstop Willson Contreras not only called a masterpiece behind the dish, but he also gunned down two Rays baserunners trying to swipe bags. On top of that, he went 2-for-3 with an RBI (driving in the second tally) and two free passes. With that, he became just the 4th catcher in history, and the first this century, to cut down at least two runners on the basepaths and log a multi-hit game in World Series. The others? Thurman Munson (1976), Terry Kennedy (1984), and Joe Girardi (1999). Jackson Chourio drove in the game-winning run in the 7th frame with an opposite-field laser that sneaked between the chalk line and the first baseman. He went 2-for-4 with a punchout, but once again proved to be the X-factor for these Brewers, who also flashed the leather with a flawless defensive performance, tracking down well-placed gappers from Tampa Bay's dangerous bats.

Además, Jackson es el líder entre los de menos de 23 primaveras con 10 juegos de por vida con al menos una empujada en postemporada. El careta y el jardinero se convirtieron en el primer par de jugadores internacionales de MLB en conectar múltiples hits en un partido de la Serie Mundial desde que lo hicieran los cubanos Yuli Gurriel y Yordan Álvarez en el Juego 5 de la edición del 2019. Hoy se juega el segundo de la serie y Tampa ha anunciado a su "As" Drew Rasmussen para lanzar las serpentinas, mientras que Milwaukee presenta a Logan Henderson quien intentará frenar a la ofensiva cartilaginosa.      At just 22 years old, the Maracaibo native has 19 career postseason RBIs, the most in history for a player under 23. Jackson also leads all players under 23 years of age with 10 career postseason games with at least one run knocked in. The backstop and the outfielder became the first pair of international MLB players to record multiple hits in a World Series game since Cuban sluggers Yuli Gurriel and Yordan Álvarez did it in Game 5 of the 2019 Fall Classic. Tonight is Game 2 of the series, and Tampa has announced their ace Drew Rasmussen to toe the slab, while Milwaukee counters with Logan Henderson, who will try to shut down the Rays' offense.
