And now my attempts to help out my program and peers came back to bite me. That was a rough night.
I was the senior leading a team including a 2nd year resident and an intern in the MICU. The intern was a replacement for another 2nd year for the night (who had the night off). Naturally, as helpful as they may be, interns are not able to contribute as much as a 2nd year, so it's considered a relative decrease in manpower.
8 consults to the MICU plus a central line placement plus 5 cardiac arrests among 3 patients. It was non-stop from the time we began until the end of the shift. I was lucky that I was able to eat during the last 30 minutes of my shift, which doesn't always happen.
I did 5 out of those 8 consults, and some were rather time-consuming and challenging. There are certainly positives involved, and I like the challenge to some degree. The central line placement is always somewhat fun to perform, especially when I'm teaching the technique to newer interns or residents.
Nevertheless, it was a lot. Hopefully tomorrow night will be calmer. Totally fine if another central line needs to be placed, however. 😉 I'm up for the procedural fun.
Time to eat and sleep significantly more than the ~1 hour that I slept yesterday.
