I believe bringing back genuine love and eradicating selfish and transactional relationships is one of the important changes we need in our society today. And I believe it starts with changing our mindset before going into any kind of relationship, whether casual, platonic or romantic.

We need to learn to show kindness without always expecting something in return. Just because you did someone a favour doesn't mean they owe you something. We should also stop judging people's worth based on their financial status, income, appearance or what they can offer us.

I have seen situations where people are denied genuine opportunities, ignored or treated as though they are less important simply because they are poor. This is one of the things that makes genuine love and human connection difficult to find today. We are gradually creating a society where people's value is measured by what they have rather than who they are.

Even in romantic relationships, the situation is becoming concerning. Some people go into relationships because they want someone who can finance their lifestyle, while others enter relationships mainly because of the sexual benefits they expect to receive. Instead of building genuine connections based on love, understanding, friendship and commitment, many people are more concerned about what they can gain.

I believe we need to start seeing relationships as an opportunity to build, support, understand and grow with one another, rather than an avenue to satisfy our personal interests. We should learn to appreciate people for who they are, not just for what they can provide.

This doesn't mean we shouldn't have standards or expect mutual support in relationships. Rather, it means that love, kindness and respect should not be reduced to transactions.

We should learn to love genuinely from our hearts, not because we want the other person to notice, appreciate, or reward us, but simply because we truly care. Love should be unconditional, not dependent on favours or what we stand to gain.

When it comes to marriage and courtship, both parties should strive to have a source of income. Even if the income is not much, it should at least be enough to cater for some basic personal needs. Love should not be built solely on money, because when the money is no longer there, what happens? Love disappears, hatred takes over, and resentment becomes the order of the day.

Let us stop making money the foundation of relationships. Let us build relationships on genuine love, mutual respect, understanding, commitment, and responsibility.

Finally, if we want genuine love to exist in our society, we must first learn to become genuine people ourselves. We cannot keep demanding the kind of love we are unwilling to give. let us embrace fairness and equal opportunities. Stop reserving job opportunities for the children of your wealthy friends and connections. Be open-minded and give everyone a fair chance, regardless of their background or financial status. Talent, competence, and hard work should matter more than connections.

The society we desire begins with the values we practise today. Image from pexel Image from thread
