Parenting is challenging. In one way we want to avoid the mistakes that we think our parents made. But also we need to keep weighing how we are currently going. I want my kids to be independent adults but at the same time, I want to give them all the care and support that they need to be in better mental health than I am. Knowing that they can always count on me with anything, the problems shouldn't be solely theirs. I hope they consider me a person to share their problems without condemning them.

I call independence is like the way to maintain oneself without the need of anyone, including parents, friends, or partners. Of course, I am there to help them always but they need to understand that I won't solve their problems, I will give support in many ways, including emotional and material when I can. But they need to grow and build their assets, why ? Because my expiration date is sooner, at least in a general way of speaking and they will need to survive after my death. If there is something left after my death to help them, that is ok but it is difficult to forecast that.

In Brazilian culture people usually think in building an empire to give the kids more comfort, but there are two consequences for that: spoiled kids and the future can be very tough. The grandfather of my wife thought of that and he invested in 3 properties. He died almost 20 years ago. And the problem is that in Brazilian justice when you die and things aren't much solved it is very expensive to deal with that. The consequence is that my mother in law and her brothers are still trying to solve that in the justice and also includes some family fights.

We can add on top of that property depreciation since many locations that he bought properties years ago got some depreciation and also with lack of maintenance since his death. What was something to help their children it turned out to be a headache. That isn't very uncommon to happen. Kids for sure need love and care, but we can get their life easier when we give them this condition to survive which probably we didn't have, for example moving from a place that had a bad problem with violence like my old town.

We should always think about giving our kids a better childhood and better conditions that we might have in our childhood. However, we need to be careful and balance what is too much spoil. They need to learn to survive, it would be problematic when they are in their 40s and we still need to figure out how to solve their problems in our elderly. They can't do that. We won't be able to help them forever and they will get their own kids and we should hope that they will try the same approach.

Ser pai ou mãe é desafiador. De certa forma, queremos evitar os erros que achamos que nossos pais cometeram. Mas também precisamos continuar avaliando como estamos indo atualmente. Quero que meus filhos sejam adultos independentes, mas, ao mesmo tempo, quero dar a eles todo o cuidado e apoio de que precisam para ter uma saúde mental melhor do que eu. Sabendo que eles sempre podem contar comigo para qualquer coisa, os problemas não devem ser somente deles. Espero que me considerem uma pessoa com quem compartilhar seus problemas sem condená-los.

Eu chamo de independência como a maneira de se manter sem a necessidade de ninguém, incluindo pais, amigos ou parceiros. Claro, estou lá para ajudá-los sempre, mas eles precisam entender que não vou resolver seus problemas, darei suporte de muitas maneiras, incluindo emocional e material quando puder. Mas eles precisam crescer e construir seus ativos, por quê? Porque minha data de expiração é mais cedo, pelo menos de uma forma geral, e eles precisarão sobreviver após minha morte. Se sobrar algo após minha morte para ajudá-los, tudo bem, mas é difícil prever isso.

Na cultura brasileira, as pessoas geralmente pensam em construir um império para dar mais conforto às crianças, mas há duas consequências para isso: crianças mimadas e o futuro pode ser muito difícil. O avô da minha esposa pensou nisso e investiu em 3 propriedades. Ele morreu há quase 20 anos. E o problema é que na justiça brasileira quando você morre e as coisas não são muito resolvidas é muito caro lidar com isso. A consequência é que minha sogra e seus irmãos ainda estão tentando resolver isso na justiça e também inclui algumas brigas familiares.

Podemos adicionar a isso a depreciação do imóvel, pois muitos locais que ele comprou imóveis anos atrás tiveram alguma depreciação e também com a falta de manutenção desde sua morte. O que era algo para ajudar seus filhos acabou se tornando uma dor de cabeça. Isso não é muito incomum de acontecer. Crianças com certeza precisam de amor e cuidado, mas podemos facilitar a vida delas quando damos a elas essa condição de sobrevivência que provavelmente não tínhamos, por exemplo, mudar de um lugar que tinha um grande problema com violência como minha cidade antiga.

Devemos sempre pensar em dar aos nossos filhos uma infância melhor e melhores condições do que poderíamos ter em nossa infância. No entanto, precisamos ter cuidado e equilibrar o que é muito estrago. Eles precisam aprender a sobreviver, seria problemático quando estivessem na casa dos 40 e ainda precisamos descobrir como resolver seus problemas na velhice. Eles não podem fazer isso. Não seremos capazes de ajudá-los para sempre e eles terão seus próprios filhos e devemos esperar que tentem a mesma abordagem.
