I remember the life before smartphones. My first cell phone was so big and I could only call as a function. Later I had a phone that had a snake game black and green. But how I used to communicate with my parents ( I was a teenager in my time). Mostly before and after arriving home. Well for some time, I had a pager. For those who don't know a pager is a text communication system in one way. You get texts but you can't answer. Nowadays, we use a lot of text systems to communicate, especially by SMS or apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger, is there an etiquette for that?

In a WhatsApp group some friends criticize me a lot for my low grammar level when sending messages. I consider this system as a quick way to communicate so I don't care about reviewing grammar. In Portuguese, we have many different accents that bind to letters, like French. And I don't use any when texting. In addition, the smartphone keyboard is so tiny that I always type the adjacent letter. Maybe for formal texts, I would be more cautious. However, I have never worked with cell phones as a main device of work.

So for me grammar errors in quick message systems are not a problem but for some it is. Especially those who work with that, people texting clients, for example, like lawyers. Another problem and caution that we should be aware of is miscommunication problems. I think that talking on the phone or face-to-face makes it easier to dismantle wrong interpretations. I am a person who usually isn't very communicative so my texts are short. I had many fights at home because of texts that my wife misunderstood. So my tip is that never conclude things only by text message, always call the person to confirm or ask something that can be interpreted in different ways. Communication is very important between two people, and sometimes texting can fail on that.

Another thing that you should be aware that you are still talking with a human on the other end. Despite the impersonality of texting, there is a human with feelings on the other side. So we should be careful to what we say and not their feelings. In addition, also be cautious with what level of information we are sending and the level of trust is the recipient. You need to remember that people can print screen a private chat.

Texting has many advantages, like telling people about delays in an appointment or just saying where they are for their loved ones. Also, it can be used to contact clients in a work environment. But humans are complicated so we need to be careful about what we write. As a family I think has many advantages especially to deal with kids for example. However, it is a fast messaging tool so why keep so stuck with some grammar rules, like removing accents and shortening words, like "u" instead of "you"?

Mas como eu costumava me comunicar com meus pais (eu era adolescente na minha época). Principalmente antes e depois de chegar em casa. Bem, por algum tempo, eu tive um pager. Para aqueles que não sabem, um pager é um sistema de comunicação por texto de uma maneira. Você recebe mensagens, mas não pode responder. Hoje em dia, usamos muitos sistemas de texto para nos comunicar, especialmente por SMS ou aplicativos como WhatsApp ou Facebook Messenger, existe uma etiqueta para isso?

Em um grupo de WhatsApp alguns amigos me criticam muito pelo meu baixo nível de gramática na hora de mandar mensagens. Considero esse sistema uma forma rápida de me comunicar, então não me importo em revisar gramática. Em português, temos muitos sotaques diferentes que se ligam às letras, como o francês. E não uso nenhum quando mando mensagens. Além disso, o teclado do smartphone é tão pequeno que sempre digito a letra adjacente. Talvez para textos formais, eu fosse mais cauteloso. No entanto, nunca trabalhei com celulares como principal dispositivo de trabalho.

Então, para mim, erros de gramática em sistemas de mensagens rápidas não são um problema, mas para alguns são. Especialmente aqueles que trabalham com isso, pessoas que enviam mensagens de texto para clientes, por exemplo, como advogados. Outro problema e cuidado que devemos ter em mente são os problemas de comunicação errada. Acho que falar ao telefone ou pessoalmente facilita a desmontagem de interpretações erradas. Sou uma pessoa que geralmente não é muito comunicativa, então meus textos são curtos. Tive muitas brigas em casa por causa de textos que minha esposa entendeu mal. Então, minha dica é que nunca conclua as coisas apenas por mensagem de texto, sempre ligue para a pessoa para confirmar ou perguntar algo que pode ser interpretado de maneiras diferentes. A comunicação é muito importante entre duas pessoas, e às vezes as mensagens de texto podem falhar nisso.

Outra coisa que você deve ter em mente é que você ainda está falando com um humano do outro lado. Apesar da impessoalidade das mensagens de texto, há um humano com sentimentos do outro lado. Portanto, devemos ter cuidado com o que dizemos e não com os sentimentos deles. Além disso, também tenha cuidado com o nível de informação que estamos enviando e o nível de confiança do destinatário. Você precisa lembrar que as pessoas podem fazer um print screen de um bate-papo privado.
