Needing money to sustain your family is a great motivator to make us do things we wouldn't imagine. Of course, I never had to do something illegal for that until now. But looking for extra work in fields that aren't part of my CV was new. It surprised me and mostly everyone that knew what I was doing.

I lived in Brazil for more than 30 years of my life, and a job that I never had imagined doing there was working with delivery in general for a couple of reasons with some different priorities. Most of the deliveries in Rio de Janeiro, the city where I used to live, are made by motorcycle or bicycle for the simple reason of fuel cost and high traffic jams. These vehicles are capable of delivery faster in a big city with a high number of vehicles on the street, I would add that bicycles are more used for deliveries made in a short distance so maybe only a local restaurant or pharmacy that delivers in the neighborhood will use them. Well, I never had a bicycle in Brazil, since I never got much help from my parents to start learning how to use it and in addition let's say that the city is a bit dangerous to use a bike daily. Since the car traffic is busy, it is very common to be hit by cars. In addition, you can also get robbed. Bicycles usually cost money and robbers love them, I knew many people who had their bikes stolen. Well, when I moved to Canada I bought a bicycle and learned by myself how to use it, but in Brazil, I never had one. Motorcycles in addition, I was always a bit scared about it. Most of the people that I know who have a motorcycle suffered bad accidents.

The reason above is probably the main reason why I never thought of working in that area, but it was also always a work field that was undervalued there. Maybe only a bit before I left Brazil some food delivery apps arrived there and maybe the field gained more people working there. Well, at that stage also our budget was fine, with our current jobs. I was teaching in a school and finishing my Master's and Ph.D. maybe I thought about driving for Uber, but I had only a small car with almost no trunk space, a Ford Fiesta. We moved to Canada and our budget got a little bit smaller. My work was providing me more income, but still not enough to cover the whole family, since my wife was still working for Brazil and losing a lot of money in the conversion from Brazilian Reals to Canadian Dollars. Her income converted in Canadian dollars was providing us with less than the minimum salary paid here.

Here in Canada food and grocery delivery apps can be used by people driving cars. The gasoline is cheaper compared to Brazil and the benefits surpass a bit the costs. So I register myself in most of the apps available in my town. I started to work during the weekends mainly but also sometimes during the nights and holidays. I started to do groceries and food deliveries for people. My friends that started to hear about it they got surprised. Friends from my Ph.D. couldn't imagine that, some of them questioned how I am doing that with my diploma. The answer was clear: " I would stop when my diploma started to generate money". I don't care what type of job I do If we need money, if it is something that can be part-time to supplement my current job.

Friends and former colleagues were surprised by this type of job, but I stopped a while ago doing deliveries. I found another part-time job that I could stay at home working as a freelancer for market research analysis for health companies. Currently, I have not had any new projects for a while and I still need money! Maybe I will be back for the deliveries soon.

Precisar de dinheiro para sustentar a família é um grande motivador para nos fazer fazer coisas que não imaginaríamos. Claro, nunca tive que fazer algo ilegal para isso até agora. Mas procurar trabalho extra em áreas que não fazem parte do meu currículo era novo. Isso me surpreendeu e, principalmente, a todos que sabiam o que eu estava fazendo.

Morei no Brasil por mais de 30 anos da minha vida, e um trabalho que eu nunca tinha imaginado fazer lá era trabalhar com entregas em geral por alguns motivos com algumas prioridades diferentes. A maioria das entregas no Rio de Janeiro, a cidade onde costumava morar, é feita de moto ou bicicleta pelo simples motivo do custo do combustível e dos congestionamentos. Esses veículos são capazes de fazer entregas mais rapidamente em uma cidade grande com um grande número de veículos na rua, eu acrescentaria que bicicletas são mais usadas para entregas feitas em uma curta distância, então talvez apenas um restaurante local ou farmácia que faz entregas no bairro as use. Bem, nunca tive uma bicicleta no Brasil, já que nunca recebi muita ajuda dos meus pais para começar a aprender a usá-la e, além disso, digamos que a cidade é um pouco perigosa para usar uma bicicleta diariamente. Como o tráfego de carros é intenso, é muito comum ser atingido por carros. Além disso, você também pode ser assaltado. Bicicletas geralmente custam dinheiro e os ladrões as adoram, conheci muitas pessoas que tiveram suas bicicletas roubadas. Bem, quando me mudei para o Canadá, comprei uma bicicleta e aprendi sozinho como usá-la, mas no Brasil nunca tive uma. Motocicletas, além disso, sempre tive um pouco de medo delas. A maioria das pessoas que conheço que tem uma moto sofreu acidentes graves.

O motivo acima é provavelmente o principal motivo pelo qual nunca pensei em trabalhar nessa área, mas também sempre foi um campo de trabalho subvalorizado lá. Talvez apenas um pouco antes de eu sair do Brasil alguns aplicativos de entrega de comida tenham chegado lá e talvez o campo tenha ganhado mais pessoas trabalhando lá. Bem, nessa fase também nosso orçamento estava bem, com nossos empregos atuais. Eu estava lecionando em uma escola e terminando meu mestrado e doutorado, talvez tenha pensado em dirigir para o Uber, mas tinha apenas um carro pequeno com quase nenhum espaço no porta-malas, um Ford Fiesta. Nos mudamos para o Canadá e nosso orçamento ficou um pouco menor. Meu trabalho estava me proporcionando mais renda, mas ainda não o suficiente para cobrir toda a família, já que minha esposa ainda estava trabalhando para o Brasil e perdendo muito dinheiro na conversão de reais brasileiros para dólares canadenses. A renda dela convertida em dólares canadenses estava nos proporcionando menos do que o salário mínimo pago aqui.

Aqui no Canadá, aplicativos de entrega de comida e supermercado podem ser usados por pessoas que dirigem carros. A gasolina é mais barata em comparação com o Brasil e os benefícios superam um pouco os custos. Então me cadastrei na maioria dos aplicativos disponíveis na minha cidade. Comecei a trabalhar principalmente nos fins de semana, mas também às vezes durante a noite e feriados. Comecei a fazer entregas de supermercado e comida para as pessoas. Meus amigos que começaram a ouvir falar sobre isso ficaram surpresos. Amigos do meu doutorado não conseguiam imaginar isso, alguns deles questionaram como eu estava fazendo isso com meu diploma. A resposta foi clara: "Eu pararia quando meu diploma começasse a gerar dinheiro". Não me importa que tipo de trabalho eu faça, se precisarmos de dinheiro, se for algo que possa ser de meio período para complementar meu emprego atual.

Amigos e ex-colegas ficaram surpresos com esse tipo de trabalho, mas parei de fazer entregas há um tempo. Encontrei outro trabalho de meio período em que poderia ficar em casa trabalhando como freelancer para análise de pesquisa de mercado para empresas de saúde. Atualmente, não tive nenhum novo projeto por um tempo e ainda preciso de dinheiro! Talvez eu volte para as entregas em breve.
