Wednesday I talked a bit about polemics in the middle of our studies, if students should be awarded and how by a good academic record. With that post I discussed how versatile we sometimes need to be to succeed in the work market. Many times what we love to work with doesn't provide enough or maybe there aren't many positions available in the market. So then we need to start exploring new fields. These fields can be related or not. If I think a bit, the current field that I am in right now requires another separate training that I didn't learn in the regular Biology school: programming.

In my case, a different training didn't replace my previous training. It was a career ramification with a new experience and skill added. Interestingly that also opened me opportunities to run away from biology totally. I met people in the computational field who invited me to send my CV to their companies. However, my fear of leaving the scientific world made me opt out despite of the better salary offered. But I won't lie, it is still something that I think about daily because money is something important and still difficult to ignore. Many people tell me, that you have Python and JavaScript experience in both back and front end, it is time to get more money. But the true is that I fear leaving all the things that I studied so much about biology and health behind, which is something that I have pleasure in working with.

In 2017, an acquaintance also came to Canada, a person who was working in the same institute in Brazil. We got closer because of the immigration process and challenges, they helped me a lot with tips in 2017. And I helped her with tips for other processes. They went to a postdoc in a University in Manitoba. The struggles in the academic world that I have already told a lot around here affected her of course. First they thought about maybe trying learning programming so they could open doors into Bioinformatics. I tried my best to help them, but it isn't a world for everyone I will confess. Then they decided to leave the academic world and go to the US to work on clinical exams.

So in this case, the person decided to leave an extent path that includes a Ph.D and a post-doc to more a technical job. In this case, the person learned a new skill and left the previous path. In addition to combining careers or investing in only one career at a time and abandoning the previous one, I can cite another option with my story as well. I was investing in my academic career and I could also invest in my school teaching career. That is possible when the time can be combined, but still depending on the level of your stress can determine how long it is possible. Right now I have sporadic freelancer jobs that can be also combined with my main career in independent paths.

I understand that the more skills that you gather, open new doors. And in our current world sometimes one career isn't enough to provide subsistence to a family. In that way, two careers can help a family to be fed but of course not allow one of them to destroy the other one. If the main career that you love is damaged by the other career, such as demanding much more time of work than expected isn't very worth it sometimes. So it depends a lot why and how to manage the two careers. I have a friend who prefers only focusing on his career, it depends really on everyone's point of view of being happy in their lives.

Quarta-feira falei um pouco sobre polêmicas no meio dos nossos estudos, se os alunos devem ser premiados e como por um bom desempenho acadêmico. Com esse post, discuti como às vezes precisamos ser versáteis para ter sucesso no mercado de trabalho. Muitas vezes, o que amamos fazer não proporciona o suficiente ou talvez não haja muitas vagas disponíveis no mercado. Então, precisamos começar a explorar novos campos. Esses campos podem estar relacionados ou não. Se eu pensar um pouco, o campo atual em que estou agora requer outro treinamento separado que não aprendi na escola regular de Biologia: programação.

No meu caso, um treinamento diferente não substituiu meu treinamento anterior. Foi uma ramificação de carreira com uma nova experiência e habilidade adicionada. Curiosamente, isso também me abriu oportunidades para fugir totalmente da biologia. Conheci pessoas na área de computação que me convidaram a enviar meu currículo para suas empresas. No entanto, meu medo de deixar o mundo científico me fez desistir, apesar do salário melhor oferecido. Mas não vou mentir, ainda é algo que penso diariamente porque o dinheiro é algo importante e ainda difícil de ignorar. Muitas pessoas me dizem que, com experiência em Python e JavaScript tanto no back quanto no front end, é hora de ganhar mais dinheiro. Mas a verdade é que temo deixar para trás todas as coisas que estudei tanto sobre biologia e saúde, que é algo que tenho prazer em trabalhar.

Em 2017, um conhecido também veio para o Canadá, uma pessoa que trabalhava no mesmo instituto no Brasil. Nos aproximamos por causa do processo de imigração e desafios, ele me ajudou muito com dicas em 2017. E eu o ajudei com dicas para outros processos. Ele foi para um pós-doutorado em uma universidade em Manitoba. As dificuldades no mundo acadêmico que já contei bastante aqui o afetaram, é claro. Primeiro ele pensou em talvez tentar aprender programação para abrir portas na Bioinformática. Fiz o meu melhor para ajudá-lo, mas vou confessar que não é um mundo para todos. Então, ele decidiu deixar o mundo acadêmico e ir para os EUA trabalhar com exames clínicos.

Então, neste caso, a pessoa decidiu deixar um caminho extenso que inclui um Ph.D. e um pós-doutorado para um trabalho mais técnico. Neste caso, a pessoa aprendeu uma nova habilidade e deixou o caminho anterior. Além de combinar carreiras ou investir em apenas uma carreira de cada vez e abandonar a anterior, posso citar outra opção com a minha história também. Eu estava investindo na minha carreira acadêmica e também poderia investir na minha carreira de ensino escolar. Isso é possível quando o tempo pode ser combinado, mas ainda assim, dependendo do nível de estresse, pode determinar por quanto tempo é possível. Atualmente, tenho trabalhos esporádicos de freelancer que também podem ser combinados com minha carreira principal em caminhos independentes.

Entendo que quanto mais habilidades você adquire, mais portas se abrem. E no nosso mundo atual, às vezes uma carreira não é suficiente para sustentar uma família. Dessa forma, duas carreiras podem ajudar a alimentar uma família, mas claro, não permitir que uma delas destrua a outra. Se a carreira principal que você ama for prejudicada pela outra carreira, como exigir muito mais tempo de trabalho do que o esperado, às vezes não vale a pena. Então, depende muito do porquê e de como gerenciar as duas carreiras. Tenho um amigo que prefere focar apenas em sua carreira, realmente depende do ponto de vista de cada um sobre ser feliz em suas vidas.
