Not long ago I wrote an article about how my birthday in 2024 is a certain threshold since I am joining my 40s. But there are other important celebrations throughout the year, usually, I celebrate the birthdays of my daughters compared to mine. I am a guy who takes celebrations but also enjoys self-reflection a lot during important time points. That is better than celebrating. I know, regular people just like to party and forget about problems and do what they like on their special days. And I enjoy thinking of the meaning of that mark. Something that I think a lot is about my upcoming anniversary day, our wedding celebration.

Não faz muito tempo, escrevi um artigo sobre como meu aniversário em 2024 representa um marco significativo, já que estou entrando na casa dos 40. Mas há outras celebrações importantes ao longo do ano; normalmente, celebro os aniversários das minhas filhas em comparação com o meu. Sou alguém que aprecia as celebrações, mas também gosta muito de fazer autorreflexão em momentos importantes. Isso é melhor do que apenas festejar. Eu sei, as pessoas em geral gostam apenas de festejar e esquecer dos problemas, fazendo o que gostam em seus dias especiais. E eu aprecio refletir sobre o significado desse marco. Algo em que penso muito é sobre meu próximo aniversário, a celebração do nosso casamento.

I got married in 2012, and I am completing more than 12 years this year. This isn't a regular celebration mark it isn't 10 or it isn't 15 years but it is still a lot that we passed together. In addition to these 12 years of marriage, we can add more 5 years together so we are also celebrating 17 years since we started dating. It is interesting how our relationship has many different types of stages. In the beginning, we are trying to conquer each other, and we aren't so sure what the other one is and how the other one views us. Does the other person want to build a life for us? Or does this person just want to chill and live in the moment? It is a period that we spent knowing more about each other, and learning how to please the other. After the wedding, we moved to the same house. We had some difficulties, since I was just finishing my Master's and by luck got an extra job as a high school period for 16 hours a week. She was also working a lot, we needed that because we had to pay the rental in Rio de Janeiro, which is a crazy price. So I can call the period between 2012 and 2017 the period of starting to build our nest. In this case, the nest was portable for sure, we were the main resource of the nest but we changed the location of our nest one more time during this period until my first child was born and also many life changes. We had our first child during a changing period, I was defending my Ph.D. with not much time for anything plus I was job hunting and got a job offer in Canada. So we moved to another country with a 6-month-old baby. That was a very challenging period when we were just focusing on the health of our family and how our nest would be moved to another country of course. But anyway, we started a new period of life that we are up to now as parents. Before 2017 we were working a lot to be able to survive, but still, we had many moments for ourselves. When we weren't working, we could travel together, watch a movie together, and have dinner together talking about us, our plans, and private problems. During the parenting period, we got a bit too much dedicated to kids! All of the time that we don't spend working, we are with the kids. And it is difficult to find time for us, or we are too tired, or we can't find anyone to stay with the kids, and we live far from any relatives. Last weekend we finally found someone to take care of the kids for 2 hours during Saturday evening (5 to 7 pm). It was weird I having this private moment with my wife again in a restaurant. Those moments are rare, we could again invest in our relationship as a couple. I feel that we got trapped so much in our daily routine that we forgot a bit about each other.

Além desses 12 anos de casamento, podemos adicionar mais 5 anos juntos, então também estamos celebrando 17 anos desde que começamos a namorar. É interessante como nosso relacionamento passou por muitas etapas diferentes. No início, estávamos tentando conquistar um ao outro, e não estávamos tão certos sobre como o outro nos via e o que pensava sobre nós. Será que a outra pessoa queria construir uma vida para nós? Ou será que essa pessoa só queria relaxar e viver o momento? Foi um período em que passamos conhecendo mais um ao outro e aprendendo a agradar o outro. Depois do casamento, mudamos para a mesma casa. Tivemos algumas dificuldades, já que eu estava terminando meu mestrado e, por sorte, consegui um trabalho extra como professor de ensino médio por 16 horas por semana. Ela também estava trabalhando muito, precisávamos disso porque tínhamos que pagar o aluguel no Rio de Janeiro, que é um preço absurdo. Então posso chamar o período entre 2012 e 2017 de período de começar a construir nosso ninho. Nesse caso, o ninho era portátil, é claro, nós éramos os principais recursos do ninho, mas mudamos o local do nosso ninho mais uma vez durante esse período, até o nascimento do meu primeiro filho e também muitas mudanças na vida. Tivemos nosso primeiro filho durante um período de mudanças, eu estava defendendo meu doutorado sem muito tempo para nada, além de estar procurando emprego e recebi uma oferta de emprego no Canadá. Então nos mudamos para outro país com um bebê de seis meses. Foi um período muito desafiador, em que estávamos focados apenas na saúde de nossa família e em como nosso ninho seria transferido para outro país, é claro. Mas de qualquer forma, iniciamos um novo período de vida que estamos vivendo até agora como pais. Antes de 2017, trabalhávamos muito para sobreviver, mas ainda tínhamos muitos momentos para nós mesmos. Quando não estávamos trabalhando, podíamos viajar juntos, assistir a um filme juntos e jantar juntos conversando sobre nós, nossos planos e problemas pessoais. Durante o período de paternidade, nos dedicamos um pouco demais aos filhos! Todo o tempo que não passamos trabalhando, estamos com os filhos. E é difícil encontrar tempo para nós, ou estamos muito cansados, ou não conseguimos encontrar alguém para cuidar dos filhos, e moramos longe de qualquer parente. No último fim de semana, finalmente encontramos alguém para cuidar dos filhos por 2 horas durante a noite de sábado (das 5 às 7 da tarde). Foi estranho ter esse momento privado com minha esposa novamente em um restaurante. Esses momentos são raros, pudemos investir novamente em nosso relacionamento como casal. Sinto que ficamos tão presos em nossa rotina diária que acabamos nos esquecendo um pouco um do outro.

So what does this upcoming anniversary mean? It means that I am reviewing our relationship and what is missing in addition to the good things that we created together, a nice environment to live together and grow kids. However, for things to continue to be very fluent as a renewed partnership, we must reflect on how we are dedicating our time to each other, not only with the house, work, and kids. For the partnership to continue we need to be more active to force us out of the routine and add some components to continue conquering the other one. Many people in Monday's challenge about friends mentioned that we can't stay alone, and our partner, husband or wife is going to be our first reference to a friend's hand when we need it, so we need to keep active and maintain this friendship. For that, we need to be there to help and have fun with this person.

Então, o que significa esse próximo aniversário? Significa que estou revisando nosso relacionamento e o que está faltando, além das coisas boas que criamos juntos, um ambiente agradável para viver e criar filhos. No entanto, para que as coisas continuem fluindo muito bem como uma parceria renovada, devemos refletir sobre como estamos dedicando nosso tempo um ao outro, não apenas com a casa, o trabalho e os filhos. Para que a parceria continue, precisamos ser mais ativos para nos tirar da rotina e adicionar alguns elementos para continuar conquistando um ao outro. Muitas pessoas no desafio de segunda-feira sobre amigos mencionaram que não podemos ficar sozinhos, e nosso parceiro, marido ou esposa será nossa primeira referência para dar a mão a um amigo quando precisarmos, então precisamos manter ativa e manter essa amizade. Para isso, precisamos estar lá para ajudar e nos divertir com essa pessoa.
