Our traumas and pressure that we get during our childhood bring some response mechanisms very deep in our brains to our current adult environment. In my path to figure out about myself how I work and why I work like that, I have one important characteristic in my life. It is called self-sacrifice. Sometimes it can be confused as a good characteristic but it isn't, it makes us angry. We are sacrificing our opinions and wishes to avoid fights. That is the goal, avoiding fights and for that we just give up of the fight even if we still think that we weren't supposed to.

It isn't an uncommon characteristic. Not long ago a true friend was telling me some stories about his life and how he abandoned some fights giving up on his true opinion or wishes. In his thoughts he mentioned, " maybe it is a good characteristic since we aren't creating conflicts". But I learned that it isn't a good characteristic since we damage ourselves with that. Another thing that I learned is that many times, at work or at home people need limits and if you don't give limits, some people will step on you. But how to start with the movement of always sacrificing your wishes for others?

One thing that happens a lot at my home and in most homes is that our life starts to focus in the home and children. The life of a couple changes a lot after getting married and changes more after they have kids. It is a normal movement, but still, each needs their private moment or with friends and even with each other. I started a new hobby: fishing. It isn't quite new, but just now I decided to buy a fishing rod and the equipment. One Sunday, after a busy Saturday with family appointments (kids' parties and other stuff that I forgot). We had the Sunday for us. I woke up early in the morning and told my wife that I was going to fish for a couple of hours in a lake near home (15-minute walk and even closer by car). She was against it since we still had to do our house chores. Even telling her that I was going to finish my chores later when I was comeback she still said that I couldn't.

I saw that she would be mad at me if was going to leave home at that time, so I sacrificed my wish for a personal moment in order of peace at home. But internally I was angry. It wasn't going to make a difference doing my chores at that moment or after. It could be a different story if actually she was sick or any of the kids, but it wasn't the case. That is something that also happens at work, when dealing with co-workers to decide the next step in projects. The best way to deal with that is with small movements to follow your wishes and opinions making sure that they are heard and sometimes executing them even against other people's opinions. Making your opinion and wish valuable also makes people see more your value.

It is a tough way for me to be more active in exiting this self-sacrifice route but I know that it exists and it isn't a good characteristic for me and my relationships. The peace that we think that it brings only returns with more internal anger and also not valorization of yourself. It is important to understand that and make an effort to exit this behavior and improve our internal peace and maybe even a better peace in the environment around us.

Nossos traumas e a pressão que recebemos durante nossa infância trazem alguns mecanismos de resposta muito profundos em nossos cérebros para o nosso ambiente adulto atual. No meu caminho para descobrir como eu funciono e por que eu funciono assim, tenho uma característica importante na minha vida. Chama-se auto-sacrifício. Às vezes, pode ser confundida como uma boa característica, mas não é, nos deixa com raiva. Estamos sacrificando nossas opiniões e desejos para evitar brigas. Esse é o objetivo, evitar brigas e, para isso, desistimos da luta mesmo que ainda achemos que não deveríamos.

Não é uma característica incomum. Não faz muito tempo, um verdadeiro amigo estava me contando algumas histórias sobre sua vida e como ele abandonou algumas lutas desistindo de sua verdadeira opinião ou desejos. Em seus pensamentos, ele mencionou: "talvez seja uma boa característica, já que não estamos criando conflitos". Mas eu aprendi que não é uma boa característica, pois nos prejudicamos com isso. Outra coisa que aprendi é que muitas vezes, no trabalho ou em casa, as pessoas precisam de limites e, se você não der limites, algumas pessoas vão passar por cima de você. Mas como começar o movimento de sempre sacrificar seus desejos pelos outros?

Uma coisa que acontece muito na minha casa e na maioria das casas é que nossa vida começa a se concentrar na casa e nas crianças. A vida de um casal muda muito após o casamento e muda mais ainda depois que têm filhos. É um movimento normal, mas ainda assim, cada um precisa de seu momento privado ou com amigos e até mesmo com o outro. Eu comecei um novo hobby: pescar. Não é tão novo, mas só agora decidi comprar uma vara de pescar e o equipamento. Um domingo, após um sábado agitado com compromissos familiares (festas de crianças e outras coisas que esqueci), tivemos o domingo para nós. Acordei cedo e disse à minha esposa que ia pescar por algumas horas em um lago perto de casa (15 minutos a pé e ainda mais perto de carro). Ela foi contra, já que ainda tínhamos que fazer nossas tarefas domésticas. Mesmo dizendo a ela que iria terminar minhas tarefas mais tarde, quando voltasse, ela ainda disse que eu não podia.

Vi que ela ficaria brava comigo se eu saísse de casa naquele momento, então sacrifiquei meu desejo de um momento pessoal em prol da paz em casa. Mas internamente eu estava com raiva. Não faria diferença fazer minhas tarefas naquele momento ou depois. Poderia ser uma história diferente se ela realmente estivesse doente ou algum dos filhos, mas não era o caso. Isso também acontece no trabalho, ao lidar com colegas de trabalho para decidir o próximo passo em projetos. A melhor maneira de lidar com isso é com pequenos movimentos para seguir seus desejos e opiniões, garantindo que sejam ouvidos e, às vezes, executando-os mesmo contra a opinião de outras pessoas. Fazer com que sua opinião e desejo sejam valiosos também faz com que as pessoas vejam mais seu valor.

É um caminho difícil para mim ser mais ativo em sair dessa rota de auto-sacrifício, mas sei que ela existe e não é uma boa característica para mim e para meus relacionamentos. A paz que pensamos que traz só retorna com mais raiva interna e também com a desvalorização de si mesmo. É importante entender isso e fazer um esforço para sair desse comportamento e melhorar nossa paz interna e talvez até uma paz melhor no ambiente ao nosso redor.
