Mandatory military service is one of the biggest polemics in many countries. I come from a country where it is mandatory for men who complete 18 years to enlist and serve for at least 1 year, some other countries also include women like Israel. However, in countries like Canada, it isn't mandatory and military service is seen as another job opportunity that you can apply for or not. Military services indeed is a necessary service for a country not only to defend for external menaces but sometimes help in the internal order if needed, but being mandatory is a bit too much in the case of Brazil.

Like many other places, in Brazil you receive an income to serve your country, creating a big opportunity, especially for those who end high school and don't seek more studies. However, it could be a pain for those who want to join universities or technical colleges. I had to enlist myself and start to show up a couple of times until I got dismissed. I was already registered at my University but still, I had to spend a couple of full days at some army barracks. They dismissed me because it is common to dismiss people that already joined another educational institute. They offered me part time but I have never been interested in pursuing an army career.

I wasn't interested because at that time I was at the end of my teens and I was in a bit of an anarchist moment at that time using my skateboard and going to punk concerts. I was totally against the army and what it represented at that moment. After I finished my studies I had a different view and I even applied as a biology teacher to an army school. Nowadays, I think that every country needs its army, only the law that requires every man to apply to it I am totally against it, but I am also against mandatory votes in elections as well, which is also a law in the country.

Despite national defense being important for every country, Brazil doesn't use it too much in its army. So I still don't see any reason to continue this mandatory service for all men. We can understand somewhat if countries that are in a constant war like Israel require it. But Brazil isn't a place like Israel, probably Brazil has fewer chances to send armies to war compared to countries where you see voluntary enlistment, like the USA and Canada. In my records, Brazil only sent the army on humanitarian expeditions, like the one after Haiti Earthquakes.

It was an experience, but now I still have my military ID saying that I am a reservist, so in case of a war, I still can be recalled by the army. But this document is important since it is necessary to be valid to renew my Brazilian passport. My parents are still living in the country so it is good to have it valid. I am against any type of obligation that a country can force on its citizens, so I guess that Canada is a bit better than Brazil in this case.

O serviço militar obrigatório é uma das maiores polêmicas em muitos países. Eu venho de um país onde é obrigatório que homens que completem 18 anos se alistem e sirvam por pelo menos 1 ano, alguns outros países também incluem mulheres como Israel. No entanto, em países como o Canadá, não é obrigatório e o serviço militar é visto como outra oportunidade de emprego para a qual você pode se candidatar ou não. O serviço militar de fato é um serviço necessário para um país não apenas para se defender de ameaças externas, mas às vezes ajuda na ordem interna se necessário, mas ser obrigatório é um pouco demais no caso do Brasil.

Como em muitos outros lugares, no Brasil você recebe uma renda para servir ao seu país, criando uma grande oportunidade, especialmente para aqueles que terminam o ensino médio e não buscam mais estudos. No entanto, pode ser uma dor para aqueles que querem ingressar em universidades ou escolas técnicas. Eu tive que me alistar e começar a aparecer algumas vezes até ser dispensado. Eu já estava registrado na minha universidade, mas ainda assim, tive que passar alguns dias inteiros em alguns quartéis do exército. Eles me dispensaram porque é comum dispensar pessoas que já ingressaram em outra instituição educacional. Eles me ofereceram meio período, mas nunca me interessei em seguir uma carreira militar.

Eu não estava interessado porque naquela época eu estava no final da minha adolescência e estava em um momento meio anarquista naquela época usando meu skate e indo a shows punk. Eu era totalmente contra o exército e o que ele representava naquele momento. Depois que terminei meus estudos, tive uma visão diferente e até me inscrevi como professor de biologia em uma escola do exército. Hoje em dia, acho que todo país precisa de seu exército, só a lei que obriga todo homem a se inscrever sou totalmente contra, mas também sou contra o voto obrigatório nas eleições, que também é uma lei no país.

Apesar da defesa nacional ser importante para todos os países, o Brasil não a utiliza muito em seu exército. Então, ainda não vejo razão para continuar com esse serviço obrigatório para todos os homens. Podemos entender um pouco se países que estão em guerra constante como Israel exigem isso. Mas o Brasil não é um lugar como Israel, provavelmente o Brasil tem menos chances de enviar exércitos para a guerra em comparação com países onde você vê alistamento voluntário, como os EUA e o Canadá. Em meus registros, o Brasil só enviou o exército em expedições humanitárias, como a que ocorreu após os terremotos no Haiti.

Foi uma experiência, mas agora ainda tenho minha identidade militar dizendo que sou reservista, então, em caso de guerra, ainda posso ser chamado de volta pelo exército. Mas esse documento é importante, pois é necessário estar válido para renovar meu passaporte brasileiro. Meus pais ainda moram no país, então é bom tê-lo válido. Sou contra qualquer tipo de obrigação que um país possa impor aos seus cidadãos, então acho que o Canadá é um pouco melhor que o Brasil nesse caso.
