The first time I created a white flash, I wasn't sure where to place it.
Should it happen before the clips move?
Should it happen after they finish?
Or should it cover the entire transition?
The answer is somewhere in the middle.

Imagine your transition lasts 8 frames.
Frame 1 is where both clips begin moving.
Frame 8 is where both clips stop.
The flash should peak around Frame 4, exactly when the outgoing clip and incoming clip are crossing each other.
My opacity keyframes usually look like this.
Frame 1: 0 percent
Frame 2: 100 percent
Frame 3: 40 percent
Frame 4: 0 percent
The flash only lasts a few frames because it isn't supposed to become the transition.
It's there to emphasize the moment when the two scenes exchange places.
Another mistake I made was fading out the video underneath.
That isn't necessary.
Leave both clips at full opacity and let the white layer briefly cover them.
The result is cleaner, brighter, and much more natural.
