Why Professional Transitions Use More Than One Whoosh

At first, I downloaded one whoosh sound and used it for every transition.

It worked, but something still felt missing.

Then I noticed that many professional editors layer several sounds together.

Each one has a different job.

The longest whoosh begins just before the movement starts and continues until the new scene settles into place.

It creates the feeling that the entire screen is moving.

A second, much shorter whoosh sits at the beginning of the transition.

It acts like the push that starts the movement.

Another short whoosh appears right as the incoming clip reaches the center.

Finally, an impact sound lands on the exact frame where the transition finishes.

Instead of hearing one effect, the viewer hears a sequence that matches what they see.

I also keep the music playing underneath.

During the transition, I lower the music slightly so the sound effects stand out, then return it to its original volume.

Good transitions aren't created by one amazing sound effect.

They're created by several small sounds working together.
