Music is ever evolving. That is to say, music from whatever era it is produced has a unique representation of that particular time. For example, musics produced in the 70's are laced with a diverse and transformative period in music, hence we have genres like rock, funk and soul, disco, pop, reggae and so on. Some popular artist in this era are Bob Marley, Elton John, James Brown, Steven Wonder, Cat Stevens and so on.

In the 90's, music began to take a shift from the old style and had started incorporating technological advancement into its portfolio, the genres in this category are R&B, pop, rap, country music etc. In our contemporary music Industry, which consists of the 2000s to date, music has totally evolved and has become a global Sensation with technological advancements taking it to the next level.

For me, I cannot really pick between the 90s and recent songs because at different points they have what they offer to the soul musically. My point is that, songs from the 90s have deep lyrical motivational sensations that appeals to the soul. The use of cultural musical instruments captivates the listener, for instance, original afrobeats that had great musicians like King Sunny Ade, fela anikulapo Kuti, Onyenka Owenu and so on, when you listen to their music you feel like they are addressing issues that affect the people of the country at the time and somehow had a way of foreseeing what the future holds. Also, Western musics produced in the 90s have a way or communicating social injustice, immigration, color, religion, love etc.

In our contemporary musical world, I listen to 90s music regularly. For instance, on my playlist I have some songs like Dolly Parton, Lady In Red, water not get enemy etc. As a Nigerian in the 21st century, you cannot but be enticed with the kind of musics produced in our current age although some of these musics have a way of relating to the soul or issues affecting the human community but somehow there are artists who sing songs that are way out of context. Their songs are laced with themes that sexualize the humanity of women, money, love, sex, bum bum and so on. While these might not be right but they offer excitement and entertainment at often times.

In conclusion, I am a big fan of the 90s song and also of our recent music. My country Nigeria has done so well in infusing technological advancements by using musical instruments of the modern day to sweeten and improve the sound that afrobeats artist produce. Music in my country is Global now and recently Tems a renowned female musician in Nigeria, won the Grammy award for best African song of the year, when you listen to this song it is a mixture of 90s Style and contemporary music this is so because the song was originally written back in the days but the style and manner in which he presented the song made it a Sensation that went global.

It is definitely a difficult choice to stick to one but instead I create a balance between them because of what they stand to offer lyrically.
