I wanna teach us a very simple and very useful French expression that would really help to improve our French 🇫🇷 vocabulary and speech also to effective communication with others.
The expression is Ça dépend, which means “It depends”. It is pronounced roughly like “sa day-pahn” and it is one of those expressions that becomes useful very quickly because not every question has a simple yes or no answer, that’s why this particular one makes you sound like a native speaker and professional.
For example, if someone asks you “Tu vas sortir ce soir ?” meaning “Are you going out tonight?”
you could answer “Ça dépend” if you are not sure yet. It doesn’t mean that you lied but it shows a certain level of uncertainty which is very normal when dealing with humanity and handling conversations.
You could also say “Ça dépend du temps”, meaning “It depends on the weather”, or “Ça dépend de la situation”, meaning “It depends on the situation”.
I like this expression so much because it is also a reminder that language reflects real life, just like I said before sometimes there isn’t one straightforward answer and it doesn’t mean you didn’t speak the truth. And please I want us to know that learning French isn’t only about memorising vocabulary but it is about learning how people actually express uncertainty, agreement, disagreement and emotion in normal conversations.
