I'm still trying to understand the science behind wireless charging in mobile phones, only to be mind-blown away last week with this groundbreaking, impossible feat in the history of surgical operations, the first of it's kind in West Africa as a whole. Guess what? It happened right here in Nigeria.
Actually, I've heard about tele-robotic operations, but never gave it much thought until the recent news of a tele-robotic surgery that took place in Redeemer’s Health Village in Ogun State.
Nigeria completed it's first historic tele-robotic surgery and the first of it's kind in West Africa in September 2026, with a surgeon in Ogun State operating remotely on a patient over 500 kilometers away in Abuja.
The lead surgeon, Professor Obi Davies-Ekwenna (Professor of urology and renal transplant and co-founder of Robomed Global), performed the surgery via a console at the Redeemer's Health Village, a facility owned by the Redeem Christian Church of God in Redemption City, Mowe, Ogun State, while the patient lay on the operating table at Nisa Premier Hospital in Abuja,
The team utilized near-zero-latency broadband powered primarily by Starlink satellite internet with MTN as a critical backup connection to sync the remote console with the surgical robot in real time to successfully remove a cancerous kidney tumor.
This was a collaboration between Redeemer's Health Village (RHV), Nisa Premier Hospital, and RoboMed Global.
What we just experienced is an impeccable achievement, and I'm really glad to be part of history.
This groundbreaking achievement is a breakthrough; very soon, people don't have to travel around the world to access quality medical care. Right there in your home country, an expert can be in any part of the world and carry out a surgical operation on any patient, no matter the location.
Indeed, science and technology are really making life easier. In the next 50-100 years, who knows what life will be like...
