Greetings, dear friends of Holos&Lotus. Today, I am joining the initiative proposed by @damarysvibra Breaking circles related to health. As I reviewed this topic, a terrible disease immediately came to mind that still has no cure and has been passed down through my mother's side of the family. They say it is hereditary.
The disease I am talking about is Alzheimer's. I saw this condition for the first time in my great-grandmother, then in her daughter (my aunt), then her sister (my grandmother), followed by my mother, and finally an uncle, the brother of my grandmother and my aunt. This disease is said to be hereditary, although others say that it is not and that it can be prevented by adopting certain habits.

One of those habits is exercising the brain by doing crossword puzzles, word searches, playing chess, to name a few examples. In short, staying mentally active. However, as my dad used to say, the brain is and always will be a mystery to science. He also said that one of the most difficult diseases to cure are those of the mind. Likewise, no one knows what causes Alzheimer's. There are several hypotheses, but no one has been able to find a way to stop it, only to delay it a little, so far. This disease is associated with unhealthy eating habits, mental laziness, and a sedentary lifestyle.
My grandmother did not pursue a career and enjoyed eating foods high in oil and refined sugars. After turning 70, she developed Alzheimer's disease. My mother, on the other hand, graduated with a teaching degree, prepared low-fat meals with natural seasonings, and was very careful with sugar. She taught classes for 25 years, which means she had a very active brain. When she retired, she spent her time doing crossword puzzles and cryptograms. She devoured entire word searches, and despite this, she suffered from Alzheimer's. In fact, it started earlier than my grandmother's, if I remember correctly, at age 57.

In the early stages of the disease, my mother stopped eating healthily and became diabetic and hypertensive, two conditions that are said to be hereditary. Once, my cousin said to me in the middle of a conversation that we were going to suffer from Alzheimer's because that disease was the legacy we had been left with. That day we argued (out of disagreement, not aggression) because I told him that it didn't have to be a “rule,” much less something decreed in our lives, that this pattern was not mandatory.
Although the origin of Alzheimer's is still unknown, I can avoid diabetes and hypertension by moderating my consumption of sugar, fat, and salt. These eating habits may contribute to better mental health. I must admit that a few months ago I was not leading a healthy lifestyle, but I decided to change that behavior. I have adopted new, healthier eating habits, and not only that, I eliminated my sedentary lifestyle. For two and a half months, I have been participating in a dance therapy and aerobics group, and I have managed to lose 6 kilos. In addition to losing some weight, I feel better physically and am more active.

We must break the cycle, not dwell on the negative, and stop passing on legacies that are detrimental to our well-being. Another thing I do differently from my beloved family who have already left this earthly plane is to live a more peaceful life, without resentment, not letting trivial things get me down, practicing mental hygiene, cultivating and maintaining my peace. I remember them like this: always in constant complaints, arguments, perhaps over unimportant things, harboring and expressing a lot of resentment.
We must live life in the best way possible, adopting healthy habits and taking actions that promote our well-being. It is possible that with this behavior, we will break the mold, obviously for the better.
