Hace muchos años me llegué a sentir sola pese a tener pareja, pocas veces él compartía conmigo, era frío, no enviaba mensajes y llamaba muy poco.

He vivido la soledad no deseada, lamentablemente no siempre logramos encajar. Invito a participar a @yasmarit y @germanandradeg.

Greetings, dear friends of Holos&Lotus, welcome to my blog. I hope you had a happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year 2026. Today, I am joining the initiative called International Day Against Unwanted Loneliness. December 16. I didn't know that loneliness had a day dedicated to it. You always learn something new, and that's why I'm grateful to write in the Hive communities. This topic is very interesting and can arise in our lives at certain times, circumstances, and stages.
“Anywhere, no matter where, you can be surrounded by lots of people and still feel lonely”
I heard that phrase in a movie, one of those modern versions of “Cinderella,” where the young prince shared his deepest thoughts with the woman who would become his princess. Being alone and feeling lonely are two very different things. Being alone is just a physical state, it is finding yourself without company, whether at home, going for a walk, in the park, shopping, or doing any other activity that involves being alone with yourself. Being alone is not linked to an emotion or mood; you can be alone and feel good, but we don't always feel good even when we are surrounded by many people. Feeling lonely is a feeling of disconnection from the rest of the world that causes sadness and can lead to distress, anxiety, depression, and psychological problems. Therefore, feeling lonely and solitude are the same thing. Solitude, on the other hand, is something else; it is the search to be with oneself because we want to be. I have experienced both states in my life. I like solitude (voluntary loneliness). I have found myself alone, enjoying that physical state, my own space. However, sometimes I have also felt lonely.

There is nothing worse than feeling that austere coldness in your soul when you feel alone and realize that it is up to you to get out of that situation. Many years ago, I felt lonely despite having a partner. He rarely shared things with me, he was cold, he didn't send messages, and he rarely called. I almost always went out alone. I asked him to be there for me, but he justified himself by saying that he “always had me in his mind and in his heart,” and for me, that wasn't enough. I told him I felt lonely, and he just repeated the same phrase over and over again. I told him that “that doesn't help me at all.” It wasn't a physical state; the feeling of loneliness lived inside me. There was almost no communication between us. He didn't listen to me when I wanted to tell him things. I really felt very lonely and I got tired of it. That attitude ended the relationship, and I left.
Many years ago, technology arrived to make our lives easier. It is assumed that thanks to phones and the internet, we have shortened distances, but this is not the case. Perhaps we do not use it properly, and the very technology that arrived to bring us closer has distanced us. People spend more time with their phones in their hands, more than normal I would say, with the whole world of social media that seems infinite. Technological advances are important and necessary, but connection and physical contact will never be replaced by them. A year ago, I had a relationship with someone who studied with me at university. I found out about him thanks to Facebook, as I did with other classmates. After more than 20 years of not seeing each other since university, we started talking again on Facebook, then on WhatsApp. We started out as friends, but things took a different turn. The bad thing was that we were never able to meet in person, and that lack of physical contact ended it all.

Feeling lonely is terrible, and everyone has their reasons. There are those who have children and a partner, yet I have heard them say that they feel lonely. When someone tells me they feel lonely, I ask them, “Why do you feel lonely?” Then I highlight the good things in their life, the things they should value: first, God; their parents who are still alive; their children, siblings, friends, and coworkers. I try to go through the list to help them see what they may not be able to see. Talking to a coworker, I was surprised when she said she felt lonely. When I asked her why, she said she needed a partner. There are factors to consider in order not to feel lonely, such as the connections, bonds, and social relationships we form, but it also has to do with self-esteem, self-confidence, our perception of life itself, and emotional balance.
I have experienced unwanted loneliness; unfortunately, we don't always fit in. I have also experienced desired loneliness; I have wanted it to give myself time for myself, but also when there are people who don't add to my life, who drain me, and that's when I decide to walk away. I think that our perception of loneliness changes as we mature. Some people fear it and therefore stay in places that hurt them just for the sake of having company. However, the important thing is to understand that being in company does not guarantee that you will not feel lonely, and that being alone is just a physical state. I invite @yasmarit and @germanandradeg to participate.
