Hace unos días y por mera decisión quise buscar esta película para volverla a ver ya que para los que no lo saben estamos ante un film de verdadero culto que salió a la luz en la década de los ochenta. Dirigida por John Carpenter, el padre de muchas películas de terror a lo largo de la historia, por ejemplo de toda la saga de "Halloween", fue la mente detrás de esta historia con toques de terror, ficción, fantasía, comedia y unos efectos visuales que para la épocas eran bastantes buenos y logrados. Espero que si no conocen este film después de haberme leído les den ganas de verlo porque es realmente una joya.
A few days ago and by mere decision I wanted to look for this film to watch it again because for those who do not know it, we are facing a real cult film that came to light in the eighties. Directed by John Carpenter, the father of many horror films throughout history, for example the entire saga of “Halloween”, was the mind behind this story with touches of horror, fiction, fantasy, comedy and visual effects that for the time were quite good and accomplished. I hope that if you don't know this film after reading this, you will want to see it because it is really a gem.
Esta historia comienza con Jack Burton (Kurt Russell), un camionero que está de paso por San Francisco. Haciendo tiempo va al barrio chino de la ciudad y pasa allí la noche apostando y bebiendo. Allí conoce a Wang Chi (Dennis Dun) y este le pide ir al aeropuerto a buscar a su novia que llega de China. Lo que ellos desconocen es que a la chica también la están esperando otras personas, nada más y nada menos que la mafia china por lo que al final, Miao Yin (Suzee Pai), termina secuestrada. A todas estas unas periodistas estaban en el sitio y también se percataron de lo sucedido.
This story begins with Jack Burton (Kurt Russell), a truck driver passing through San Francisco. Making time he goes to Chinatown in the city and spends the night gambling and drinking. There he meets Wang Chi (Dennis Dun) who asks him to go to the airport to pick up his girlfriend arriving from China. What they do not know is that the girl is also waiting for other people, nothing more and nothing less than the Chinese mafia so that in the end, Miao Yin (Suzee Pai), ends up kidnapped. In the end, Miao Yin (Suzee Pai) ends up being kidnapped.
Digo lo de la periodista porque al final Gracie Law (Kim Cattrall) será parte importante de la historia. Resulta entonces que descubren que dicha mafia está liderada por David Lo Pan (James Hong), una persona muy extraña que se dice ha vivido miles de años gracias a su manejo de la magia negra china. A pesar de todas estas alarmas estos hombres deciden ponerse en marcha hasta las profundidades del barrio chino y buscar a la chica secuestrada. A partir de acá comienza un viaje lleno de magia y locura en donde deberán hacer frente a fuerzas y hombres que no son de este plano terrenal y ser testigos de hechizos y ceremonias de siglos antigüedad.
I say the journalist because in the end Gracie Law (Kim Cattrall) will be an important part of the story. It turns out then that they discover that the mafia is led by David Lo Pan (James Hong), a very strange person who is said to have lived for thousands of years thanks to his handling of Chinese black magic. Despite all these alarms, these men decide to set out into the depths of Chinatown and search for the kidnapped girl. From here begins a journey full of magic and madness where they must face forces and men who are not of this earthly plane and witness spells and ceremonies of centuries old.
Cuando les digo que la película es un culto es porque lo es. La trama es sencilla: buscar, pelear, rescatar y escapar; no hay más. La cosa es todo lo que Jack y compañía se encuentran en ese camino. Cuando la vi por primera vez era medio niño y quedé fascinado a pesar de que en parte me diera miedo, esto porque la trama está llena de misterio, cada paso que dan en aquel lugar es un completo azar porque no es solo por los hombres que van a querer matarte sino porque detrás de ellos hay una magia oscura que hace que todo esté más cargado de "terror". La cultura china está muy presente, pero bastante, lo que hace que el misticismo sea mayor.
When I say that the film is a cult film, that's because it is. The plot is simple: search, fight, rescue and escape; that's all there is to it. The thing is everything Jack and company encounter along the way. When I saw it for the first time I was half a kid and I was fascinated even though it was partly scary, this because the plot is full of mystery, every step they take in that place is a complete chance because it is not only because of the men who are going to want to kill you but because behind them there is a dark magic that makes everything more loaded with “terror”. Chinese culture is very present, but quite a lot, which makes the mysticism even greater.
De las cosas más destacables son los efectos visuales. Para ser una película de 1986 hay que decir que están muy top. La gran mayoría están en el marco de los efectos de la magia pero ver cabezas explotar, cuerpos viajar a través de los rayos, láseres salir de ojos y bocas y los típicos hechizos extravagantes de un viejo de 80 años que conoce todo de su cultura son algunas de las cosas que podrán ver. No hay nada de sangre ni gore, la película no va de eso pero si peleas bastante entretenidas tanto en masa como individuales. Todas bajo el contexto y realidad de hace casi 40 años, hay que tener en cuenta eso.
One of the most remarkable things are the visual effects. For a 1986 film, they are very top notch. The vast majority are in the framework of magic effects but seeing heads explode, bodies travel through lightning, lasers come out of eyes and mouths and the typical fancy spells of an 80 year old who knows everything about his culture are some of the things you will see. There is no blood or gore, the movie is not about that, but there are some pretty entertaining fights both in mass and individual. All under the context and reality of almost 40 years ago, so keep that in mind.
Los personajes son muy cool. Jack es un tipo testarudo que siempre va a querer hacer las cosas a su manera, Wanga por otro lado es más recatado e increíblemente hábil con el Kung Fu. Otras de las cosas que recuerdo es que me enamoré de las dos mujeres, de Miao Yin como de Gracie y es que son parte de un ritual para acabar con una maldición que tiene Lo Pan por lo que están vestidas para la ocasión siendo realmente muy bonitas. Ellos cuatro junto a Lo Pan son el eje central. Nada destacable digno de un Oscar pero de verdad que son memorables, para mi estos personajes son parte de la cultura pop del cine.
The characters are very cool. Jack is a stubborn guy who will always want to do things his way, Wanga on the other hand is more demure and incredibly skilled with Kung Fu. Other things I remember is that I fell in love with the two women, Miao Yin as well as Gracie and they are part of a ritual to end a curse that Lo Pan has so they are dressed for the occasion being really very pretty. The four of them together with Lo Pan are the central axis. Nothing remarkable worthy of an Oscar but they are really memorable, for me these characters are part of the pop culture of cinema.
En líneas generales es una película que lo tiene todo, muy disfrutable y diferente. Buenas visuales, entendiendo la época, efectos cool, secuencias de peleas entretenidas y una trama simple pero que funciona. Está en Star+ pero también la pueden buscar en los rincones del internet, les aseguro que está. Dura un poco más de hora y media. Les dejo el tráiler por acá para que le echen un ojo en caso de que no la conozcan.
Overall it is a film that has it all, very enjoyable and different. Good visuals, understanding the era, cool effects, entertaining fight sequences and a simple but working plot. It's on Star+ but you can also search for it in the nooks and crannies of the internet, I assure you it is. It lasts a little over an hour and a half.
