Muchos, porque me incluyo, estábamos muy escépticos con eso de tener 48 selecciones en un mundial más que todo por el tema de la calidad de los partidos dada las selecciones que íbamos a ver. Era una preocupación real porque uno pensaba como iban a competir países como Curazao, la Republica Democrática del Congo y el propio Cabo Verde. Es más, uno haciendo las quinielas afirmaba que estas selecciones se iban a en cero y dando actuaciones muy pobres para lo que significa estar en mundial. Puedo decir que, por lo menos hasta el día de ayer, estaba muy equivocado y no da pena en admitirlo porque esto a lo que beneficia es al espectáculo y a la esencia del deporte en si misma.
Many of us, myself included, were very skeptical about having 48 teams in a World Cup, mainly due to concerns about the quality of the matches given the teams we were going to see. It was a real worry because we wondered how countries like Curaçao, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Cape Verde would compete. In fact, when making predictions, I was sure these teams would fail miserably and put on very poor performances for a World Cup. I can say that, at least until yesterday, I was very wrong, and I'm not ashamed to admit it because this benefits the spectacle and the very essence of the sport.
Cabo Verde, este pequeño país ubicado en un archipiélago en medio del Atlántico, ha sido la grata y sorpresiva revelación de este mundial, no tanto por lo pintorescos y alegres que son sus fanáticos sino por la plantada de cara que han demostrado en sus dos presentaciones. Y es que como dice el titulo de esta reseña Cabo verde ha logrado pararse firme ante dos campeonas mundiales y más impresionante aún, a ambas les ha sacado puntos. El grupo H, ese que sobre el cual no habían dudas de quien iba a acceder a la ronda de dieciseisavos se ha complicado de una manera tal que TODO se decidirá en la última jornada; ni el primer lugar ni la selección eliminada está definida. Y la razón del porque está pasando todo esto es por la irreverencia de Cabo Verde (y un poco por el pobre nivel de Uruguay).
Cape Verde, this small country located in an archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic, has been the pleasant and surprising revelation of this World Cup, not so much for the colorful and cheerful nature of its fans, but for the sheer determination it has shown in its two matches. As the title of this review suggests, Cape Verde has managed to stand firm against two world champions and, even more impressively, has taken points from both. Group H, where there was no doubt about who would advance to the round of 32, has become so complicated that EVERYTHING will be decided on the final matchday; neither the first-place finish nor the eliminated team is yet determined. And the reason for all this is Cape Verde's audacity (and to some extent, Uruguay's poor performance).
Algunos discutirán las formas del como Cabo Verde logró conseguir sendos empates, contra España defendiendo con todo lo que tenían y gracias a un gran Vozinha y el día de ayer contra Uruguay aprovechándose de errores garrafales cometidos por la saga defensiva charrúa. Porque si, el primer gol, que fue golazo y no hay que restarle merito al tiro libre, fue un mal armado y mala defensa de la barrera mientras que el segundo fue de la más inexplicable falta de comunicación entre centrales y portero. Pero como se dice por ahí: hay que estar en el momento exacto para hacer los goles y los jugadores caboverdianos estuvieron. Por cierto, que el primer gol de esta selección en un mundial haya sido el tiro libre de Kevin Pina es una locura total. Pero Cabo Verde no solo ganó por esas circunstancias o "fortuna", hay otras cosas por ahí.
Some will debate how Cape Verde managed to secure two draws: against Spain, defending with everything they had thanks to a great performance from Vozinha, and yesterday against Uruguay, capitalizing on glaring errors by the Uruguayan defense. Yes, the first goal, a spectacular strike (and the free kick deserves credit), resulted from poor wall setup and defense, while the second stemmed from an inexplicable lack of communication between the center-backs and the goalkeeper. But as they say, you have to be in the right place at the right time to score, and the Cape Verdean players were. Incidentally, the fact that this team's first-ever World Cup goal was Kevin Pina's free kick is absolutely incredible. But Cape Verde didn't win solely due to those circumstances or "luck"; there were other factors at play.
Parte de lograr empatar ante una de las favoritas para ganar el mundial y otra que es caracterizada por su empuje y garra pasa por la mentalidad de sus jugadores y porque esta es una selección sumamente ordenada, que tiene ciertos fundamentos del futbol bien aprendidos (contraataques, defensa en bloques y marca férrea) y porque al final del día no tienen absolutamente nada que perder. Ayer ante Uruguay cuando iban perdiendo 2-1, como podían, seguían presionando lo que terminó por forzar el error de Mathias Olivera y así lograr consumar el empate. Lo más sorprendente de esto es que los africanos tuvieron más remates al arco que los uruguayos a pesar de no tener la posesión del balón; esto nos habla de lo que les decía, oportunidad que veían, oportunidad que aprovechaban al máximo.
Part of managing to draw against one of the favorites to win the World Cup, a team known for its drive and determination, lies in the mentality of its players. This is a highly organized team with a solid grasp of fundamental football principles (counter-attacks, a compact defensive unit, and tight marking), and ultimately, they have absolutely nothing to lose. Yesterday, against Uruguay, when they were losing 2-1, they continued to press as best they could, which eventually forced Mathias Olivera into a mistake and allowed them to equalize. The most surprising thing about this is that the Africans had more shots on goal than the Uruguayans despite not having more possession; this illustrates what I was saying: every opportunity they saw, they took full advantage of.
Aprovecho para mencionar un poco el terrible nivel de Uruguay. No pasar del empate contra Arabia Saudita y ahora con Cabo Verde puede ser catastrófico pensando que contra España se van a jugar el pase de ronda. Para mi el problema principal es Marcelo Bielsa, un entrenador que más allá de su capacidad para formar jugadores, como técnico no es uno ganador. Estamos hablando de que el último titulo de nombre lo consiguió hace 28 años en el futbol argentino. No es solo empatar, porque ese resultado no tiene porque ser malo, es la forma en como se vio en ambos partidos. Contra España será un gran encuentro porque ambas selecciones necesitan ganar. Cabo Verde puede dar el batacazo si logra la victoria contra Arabia Saudita. ¿Es imposible? - para nada. Y desde esta tribuna estaremos alentando a estas selecciones "pequeñas".
I'd like to take this opportunity to briefly mention Uruguay's terrible form. Failing to get past a draw against Saudi Arabia and now against Cape Verde could be catastrophic, especially considering they'll be playing for a spot in the next round against Spain. For me, the main problem is Marcelo Bielsa, a coach who, despite his ability to develop players, isn't a winning manager. We're talking about the last title he won in Argentina 28 years ago. It's not just about the draws, because that result isn't necessarily bad; it's the way they played in both matches. The match against Spain will be crucial because both teams need to win. Cape Verde could pull off a major upset if they manage to beat Saudi Arabia. Is it impossible? Not at all. And from this platform, we'll be cheering on these "smaller" teams.
