DBZ has many movies, and most of them are highly underrated. One of those is the one we're going to talk about today; in fact, for me, it's one of the best. As always, it's important to mention that these stories aren't canon, but this particular one has an element that becomes part of the main storyline, making it somewhat relevant for understanding the origin of something specific. Unlike the last few films I've reviewed, this one takes place a bit later, specifically after the defeat of Majin Buu, and we know why we see Goku transformed into a Super Saiyan 3.
DBZ tiene muchas películas y la gran mayoría de ellas son muy infravaloradas, una de esas es de la que vamos a hablar el día de hoy; de hecho para mi es una de las mejores. Como siempre hay que decir estas historias no son canónicas pero en esta en particular si hay un elemento que se vuelve parte de la historia principal lo que la hace un poco relevante para entender el origen de algo en especifico. A diferencia de los últimos films que he reseñado esta se ubica un poco más adelante, específicamente después de la derrota de Majin Buu y se sabe porque tenemos a un Goku convertido en SS3.
Here we have an old man named Hoi who appears out of nowhere and tries to trick everyone into helping him open a mysterious box. The thing is, it's so tightly sealed that they decide to summon Shenlong himself to open it. It turns out that inside was a trapped man named Tapion, who sees what has just happened as a grave mistake. Unbeknownst to him, they have just released a demon named Hildegarn, a demon that this legendary hero had been containing within the box. Hoi was no innocent old man; he was a sorcerer who knew exactly what he was doing, to the point that he successfully deceived everyone. From here begins a relentless battle against this enemy, who is very different from anything they had faced before.
Acá tenemos a un anciano llamado Hoi quien aparece de la nada y que busca engañar a todos de que lo ayuden para así poder abrir una caja misteriosa. La cosa es que está tan sellada que deciden llamar al mismo Shenlong para que la abra. Resulta que dentro de ella había un hombre atrapado llamado Tapión, quien ve como un grave error lo que acaba de pasar y es que sin saberlo acaban de liberar a un demonio llamado Hildegarn, demonio que estaba siendo contenido por este héroe legendario en dicha caja. Hoi no era ningún anciano inocente, era un hechicero que sabía perfectamente lo que hacía al punto que en efecto logró engañar a todos. A partir de acá comienza una batalla incansable contra este enemigo el cual es muy diferente a lo que se habían enfrentado antes.
There are several things I loved about this movie that made it one of my favorites. The first is learning the origin of Trunks' sword. It's in this story that we discover the origin of Vegeta's son's iconic weapon: he, having no siblings, saw that role model in Tapion, to the point that they formed a very sincere and affectionate relationship. Tapion also saw in Trunks the brother he had lost to this demon, so yes, there was a brotherhood between them from the very beginning. All those interactions were really cool and gave the film depth, so it wasn't all just about the fighting.
Hay varias cosas que me gustaron de esta película para que la catalogara como una de las favoritas. Lo primero es conocer el origen de la espada de Trunks. Es justamente en esta historia donde conocemos de donde salió la típica arma del hijo de Vegeta y es que él al no tener hermanos vio en Tapión esa figura al punto de que hicieron una relación muy sincera y de cariño. Tapión también vio en Trunks al hermano que perdió alguna vez por culpa de este demonio por lo que si, entre los dos hubo una hermandad desde el principio. Todas esas interacciones fueron realmente cool y le dieron al film una profundidad para que todo no fuera solo la pelea.
The second thing is that we see the famous SS3 transformation not only in Goku but also in the fusion of Trunks and Goten, Gotenks, a character I've always liked a lot, even though they always portray him as strangely weak and chaotic. Obviously, Gohan and Vegeta appear, but as always, they don't have much of a role in these films. Personally, I feel this movie is different because of the nature of the villain; he's more mysterious, steeped in dark magic, something not very common in DBZ. Stepping away from the usual formula to give us a truly fearsome enemy is something to be grateful for. And the highlight of all this is what Goku has to do to finally defeat Hildegarn: not only transform into SS3 but also perform a technique called "The Dragon Fist." Seeing Goku save the planet again, while transformed into SS3, is something we should never get tired of.
Lo segundo es que vemos la famosa transformación del SS3 no solo en Goku sino que también en la fusión de Trunks y Goten, Gotenks, un personaje que siempre me ha gustado mucho aunque siempre lo hacen extrañamente débil y caótico. Obviamente por ahí salen Gohan y Vegeta pero como siempre no pintan mucho en estos films. Personalmente siento que esta película es diferente por la naturaleza del villano, es algo más lleno de misterio, de magia negra, algo que no es muy común en DBZ. Salirse de la línea de siempre para darnos un enemigo realmente temible es algo que se agradece. Y bueno el punto máximo de esto es lo que tiene que hacer Goku para finalmente derrotar a Hildegarn, no solo convertirse en SS3 sino realizar una técnica llamada "el ataque del dragón". Ver a Goku salvar al planeta, otra vez, y estando transformado en SS3 es de las cosas de las que uno no nos deberíamos de cansar.
In the end, we have a very well-rounded and cool movie to watch, with lots of action, great fight scenes, plenty of drama, awesome transformations, and interesting backstories for the characters; it's truly comprehensive. As I said, it's very underrated, so if you're a DBZ fan and haven't seen it, you should. It's less than an hour long and a real gem. I've included the trailer below.
Al final tenemos una película muy redonda y cool de ver donde pasan muchas cosas, buenas escenas de pelea, mucho sufrimiento, buenas transformaciones, el trasfondo personal que hay con sus personajes; es muy completa la verdad. Como dije, muy infravalorada por lo que si son fanáticos de DBZ y no la han visto, deberían. Dura menos de 1 hora y es una verdadera joya. Les dejo el tráiler por acá abajo.
