Esta semana que acaba de culminar se realizó el sorteo de lo que será la fase de liga de la Champions League la cual dará inicio el 8 de septiembre y cuya final se jugará en el estadio Metropolitano, casa del Atlético de Madrid. Como ya lo dije en su momento este nuevo formato ha sido uno que poco a poco me ha terminado de convencer, al principio tener una especie de todos contra todos era algo con lo que no estábamos acostumbrados pero al final resultó ser una idea bien pensada porque tenemos partidos de todo tipo y porque de verdad no es tan sencillo avanzar como parece, hay que hacer las cosas realmente bien para quedar dentro de las posiciones que avanzan de manera directa.
This past week saw the draw for the Champions League group stage, which kicks off on September 8th and will culminate in the final at the Metropolitano Stadium, home of Atlético de Madrid. As I mentioned before, this new format has gradually won me over. Initially, a round-robin format was something we weren't used to, but it ultimately proved to be a well-thought-out idea because we have all kinds of matches, and because advancing isn't as easy as it seems. You have to perform exceptionally well to secure a direct qualification spot.
Hoy vamos a hablar un poco del camino de algunos de esos clubes que les tocará transitar para buscar la tan ansiada "orejona". Creo que los emparejamientos que involucran al Barcelona, PSG y Manchester City pueden ser los más llamativos y picantes tanto por la historia que hay como por todos los fichajes recientes que se han dado en este mercado de pases. Rodri vuelve a verse las caras con su ex equipo pero vestido de blaugrana, Ferrán Torres también tendrá reencuentro esta vez pero vestido con la camisa del París y después de haber declarado que el mejor equipo para ganar la Champions es el PSG; es decir, hay razones para considerar estos partidos como grandes enfrentamientos que nos dejará esta primera fase de liga. Si a eso le sumamos todo el morbo que existe entre el Barca y el PSG pues sin dudas estaremos ante un gran ambiente. Increíble como el mercado fue capaz de unir justamente a los tres clubes que se van a ver las caras.
Today we're going to talk a bit about the path some of the clubs will have to travel in their quest for the coveted Champions League trophy. I think the matchups involving Barcelona, PSG, and Manchester City could be the most exciting and intriguing, both because of their history and all the recent signings in this transfer window. Rodri will face his former team again, this time wearing the Barcelona colors. Ferran Torres will also have a reunion, this time wearing the Paris Saint-Germain shirt, after having declared that PSG is the best team to win the Champions League. In other words, there are reasons to consider these matches as major clashes that this first phase of the league will bring us. If we add to that all the intrigue surrounding the Barcelona-PSG rivalry, we'll undoubtedly be in for a fantastic atmosphere. It's incredible how the transfer market managed to bring together these three clubs.
Seguimos con el Real Madrid que le tocará bailar con el Inter y el Arsenal. Creo que para los blancos es una parte del camino un poco engañosa, el Arsenal, actual campeón de la Premier y finalista, se le da bien jugar contra los españoles, sino pregúntenle a Declan Rice y al Inter, actual campeón de Italia, siempre es incomodo de jugarle, es un club áspero. Cualquier cosa puede suceder en esos tres partidos, no lo veo nada claro. Lo que cambia con el Arsenal es que se verá contra el todopoderoso Bayern y el Inter hará lo propio contra el Liverpool. Creo que de los grandes ocho equipos del bombo 1 el que menos confianza me genera es precisamente los del Anfield, no terminaron bien la temporada pasada y en esta tampoco su comienzo ha sido el mejor, 2 pts de 6.
We continue with Real Madrid, who will have to contend with Inter and Arsenal. I think this is a somewhat tricky part of the journey for Los Blancos. Arsenal, the current Premier League champions and finalists, are good against Spanish teams—just ask Declan Rice. And Inter, the current Italian champions, are always a difficult team to play against; they're a tough club. Anything can happen in those three matches; I don't see it as a sure thing at all. What's different for Arsenal is that they'll face the all-powerful Bayern Munich, and Inter will do the same against Liverpool. I think that of the top eight teams in Pot 1, the one I have the least confidence in is precisely the team from Anfield. They didn't finish last season well, and their start this season hasn't been the best either, with 2 points out of 6.
El Bayern siempre tiene que ser considerado entre los favoritos, pasan los años y siguen teniendo un gran equipo y siguen siendo una maquina que impone mucho respeto. Sus rivales fuertes son el Arsenal y el Atlético de Madrid. Los del Cholo Simeone también son una interrogante porque te pueden hacer un gran partido pero después hacen 3 muy malos y todo lo que avanzan lo terminan perdiendo. El Arsenal supo callarme la temporada pasada con aquello de ser un equipo frío y no ganador pero los colchoneros no, para este servidor el equipo más pequeño de este bombo 1, no solo por número de títulos sino por actitud. A lo mejor pueden ser capaces de darle un susto a alguien, lo hicieron con el Barcelona, pero de allí no pasan.
Bayern Munich always has to be considered among the favorites. Years go by, and they still have a great team and remain a machine that commands a lot of respect. Their strongest rivals are Arsenal and Atlético Madrid. Diego Simeone's team is also a question mark because they can play one great match but then have three very bad ones, and they end up losing every match they advance. Arsenal managed to silence my critics last season with their claims of being a cold, unwinning team, but Atlético Madrid didn't. For me, they're the weakest team in Pot 1, not only in terms of titles but also in terms of attitude. Perhaps they can give someone a scare, as they did with Barcelona, but they won't go any further than that.
Y claro, acá estamos hablando de los 8 más importantes pero en el camino de todos hay otros clubes de cuidado: Manchester United, Roma, Porto, Aston Villa, Napoli, Villarreal, el sorpresivo Bodø/Glimt, PSV, etc. Cualquiera de estos equipos puede aguar la fiesta de un "grande" por lo que hay que tener cuidado porque para algunos el camino puede estar llenos de espinas. Hablar de favoritos es imposible porque apenas estamos arrancando la temporada en todas las ligas europeas pero si hay que decir que la gran mayoría se reforzó bien en este mercado pero de eso hablaremos esta semana en otra reseña.
And of course, we're talking about the top eight, but there are other clubs to watch out for along the way: Manchester United, Roma, Porto, Aston Villa, Napoli, Villarreal, the surprising Bodø/Glimt, PSV, and so on. Any of these teams could spoil the party for a "big" club, so you have to be careful because for some, the road ahead could be fraught with difficulties. Talking about favorites is impossible because we're just getting started with the season in all the European leagues, but it's worth noting that the vast majority of teams strengthened their squads well in this transfer window. We'll discuss that in more detail this week in another review.
