Hablar de algo que no esté relacionado con lo que está pasando acá en mi país es complicado pero también es algo que lo veo necesario. Ver un partido de futbol, hacer ejercicio o simplemente apartarte un rato de la pantalla del teléfono puede hacernos sentir culpables pero repito, es muy necesario. La tranquilidad mental es vital en estos momentos y en mi caso ver futbol es una especie de bálsamo. El día de ayer presenciamos uno de los partidos que en la previa era catalogado como uno de los más importantes e intensos de esta primera fase, si a esto le sumamos la situación en la que llegaba este grupo H a esta última jornada pues la expectativa era mucho mayor.
Talking about something unrelated to what's happening here in my country is difficult, but it's also something I see as necessary. Watching a football match, exercising, or simply taking a break from your phone screen might make you feel guilty, but I repeat, it's essential. Peace of mind is vital right now, and in my case, watching football is a kind of balm. Yesterday, we witnessed one of the matches that was considered one of the most important and intense of this first phase. Adding to that the situation in which Group H arrived at this final matchday, the anticipation was even greater.
España llegaba con 4 puntos, Cabo Verde con 2 puntos, Uruguay y Arabia Saudita con 1 punto; es decir, cualquier cosa podía pasar. Lo que NADIE esperaba es lo que precisamente terminó ocurriendo: que Cabo Verde terminara la fase de grupo INVICTA tras su empate con Arabia y que Uruguay culminara con apenas 2 unidades y haciendo una actuacion lamentable y paupérrima. Esa "garra charrúa" que durante años caracterizó a esa selección no existe más, creo que hay jugadores que no están al nivel, técnicamente no se entiende mucho a que juegan y lo más importante: Marcelo Bielsa es un fracaso. Lo dije anteriormente en otra reseña, su legado es el de formar a jugadores pero cuando hablamos de logros o títulos, Bielsa es la nada absoluta.

What NO ONE expected is precisely what ended up happening: Cape Verde finishing the group stage UNDEFEATED after their draw with Saudi Arabia, and Uruguay finishing with just 2 points and putting on a lamentable and pathetic performance. That "Uruguayan grit" that characterized that team for years no longer exists. I think there are players who aren't up to par, technically it's hard to understand what their playing style is, and most importantly: Marcelo Bielsa is a failure. I said it before in another review, his legacy is developing players, but when we talk about achievements or titles, Bielsa is absolutely nothing.
El ambiente, según la propia prensa, dentro de la selección uruguaya antes del partido de ayer era bastante tenso, sabemos que cuando se filtran este tipo de informaciones es porque algo hay ahí. Discusiones y malentendidos entre algunas de las figuras y el entrenador podrían haber hecho mella en el funcionamiento colectivo. Viendo lo visto Uruguay no jugó a nada, en el primer tiempo hay que decir que el baile y repasada que le estaba dando España era muy grande y evidente, nunca hubo presión, no llegaron ni una vez con peligro al arco de Unai Simón, parecía una selección con 6 puntos y que lo estaba haciendo es dosificar de cara a la siguiente ronda, esa necesidad de urgencia, con la que debieron haber salido desde el minuto 1 no existió.
According to the press, the atmosphere within the Uruguayan national team before yesterday's match was quite tense. We know that when this kind of information leaks, it's because there's something to it. Arguments and misunderstandings between some of the key players and the coach could have affected the team's performance. Judging by what we saw, Uruguay played like nothing. In the first half, Spain was clearly dominating them. There was never any pressure, they didn't even manage a single dangerous attack on Unai Simón's goal. They looked like a team with only six points, simply conserving energy for the next round. That sense of urgency, which they should have shown from the first minute, was completely absent.
España tampoco fue letal pero la posesión y el manejo de los tiempos casi siempre fue de ellos. Todo era monótono hasta el final de los primeros 45 minutos cuando Alex Baena con un tiro al arco, diría yo que muy manejable, pone el 1-0 a favor de España. Desde Uruguay los propios fanáticos siempre estuvieron en contra con que Muslera fuera al mundial dado que no había hecho méritos, mucho menos que fuera el portero titular. ¿El resultado? - errores en los 3 partidos porque fue protagonista para mal en la mayoría de los goles que recibe la selección. El de ayer en particular fue bastante grosero el error de calculo, puede que el balón le haya picado un poco pero de igual manera es netamente su responsabilidad. Fue tal el desastre que el propio Muslera decidió no salir a jugar para la segunda mitad del partido.

Everything was monotonous until the end of the first 45 minutes when Alex Baena, with a shot on goal—a very manageable one, I'd say—put Spain ahead 1-0. Even Uruguayan fans had always been against Muslera going to the World Cup, given that he hadn't earned the right to be the starting goalkeeper. The result? Errors in all three matches, as he was the main culprit for most of the goals the team conceded. Yesterday's goal, in particular, was a glaring miscalculation; the ball might have bounced slightly, but it's still entirely his responsibility. The disaster was so great that Muslera himself decided not to come out for the second half.
Por si eso no fuera suficiente a los pocos minutos del segundo tiempo vemos como Bielsa, de manera realmente inexplicable, decide sacar a Valverde, probablemente el mejor jugador que tiene en la plantilla. Es extraño porque vas perdiendo, ¿cómo sacas a un jugador que te puede ayudar de varias maneras?, pues cosas que solo el técnico argentino se le ocurre. Según él lo que buscaba era más poder ofensivo y con Valverde eso no era posible. Es verdad que a Uruguay se le vio una mínima mejora, por lo menos buscaba un poco más pero todo muy alejado del nivel esperado. Al final solo patearon 1 o dos veces al arco, la posesión fue menos del 40%, los pases concretados fueron la mitad de los de España, un despropósito total. Quedar eliminado por Cabo Verde tiene que ser considerado un fracaso total en Uruguay, dudo que Marcelo Bielsa continúe al mando de esta selección. Junto a la clasificación de los africanos a los dieciseisavos diría que esta eliminación es de las grandes sorpresas del mundial.
As if that weren't enough, just a few minutes into the second half, we see Bielsa, in a truly inexplicable move, decide to take off Valverde, probably the best player on the team. It's strange because you're losing, so how do you take off a player who can help you in so many ways? Well, it's something only the Argentine coach would think of. According to him, what he was looking for was more attacking power, and with Valverde, that wasn't possible. It's true that Uruguay showed a slight improvement; at least they were trying a little harder, but it was all far from the expected level. In the end, they only had one or two shots on goal, possession was less than 40%, and their passing accuracy was half that of Spain—a complete fiasco. Being eliminated by Cape Verde has to be considered a total failure for Uruguay. I doubt Marcelo Bielsa will continue to manage this team. Along with the Africans' qualification for the round of 32, I'd say this elimination is one of the biggest surprises of the World Cup.
