En mi última entrada por acá hablé de la naturaleza que estaban teniendo los partidos de dieciseisavos de este mundial y que la característica principal que presentaban era lo agónicos que estaban siendo. Eso lo dije antes de ver los partidos de Portugal-Croacia, Egipto-Australia y el Argentina-Cabo Verde. ¿Qué quiere decir esto? - pues que la tendencia es clara, que estamos en un mundial sumamente parejo en donde no se sabe por donde puede saltar la sorpresa. Si que es cierto que a partir de ahora, de los octavos de final, la balanza debería de estar más equilibrada la realidad es que no se sabe, vienen partidos que son una real incógnita en los que puede pasar cualquier cosa.
In my last post here, I talked about the nature of the Round of 32 matches in this World Cup, noting their particularly agonizing nature. I said this before seeing the Portugal-Croatia, Egypt-Australia, and Argentina-Cape Verde matches. What does this mean? Well, it means the trend is clear: we're in an extremely evenly matched World Cup where it's impossible to predict where an upset might occur. While it's true that from now on, from the Round of 16 onward, the balance should be more even, the reality is that anything can happen. The upcoming matches are complete unknowns.
Hablemos de los dos encuentro más importantes de estos tres que les mencioné. El Portugal-Croacia se sabía que no iba a dar tregua porque creo que son selecciones muy parecidas. Para mi los lusos han decepcionado un poco, creo que tienen una de las mejores plantillas de este mundial pero en cancha no han demostrado mucho de esa calidad. Vitinha ha tenido un mundial discreto, igual con Joao Neves; Cristiano poco puede hacer si no le llega el balón pero también son 41 años encima. Y esto el técnico Roberto Martínez lo sabe, de ahí a que se atreviera a sustituirlo en un partido tan trascendental. Para suerte del español los movimientos le salieron bien, Portugal terminó ganando pidiendo casi la hora y poco se habló de dicho cambio. ¿Fue sorprendente? - pues si. Creo que nadie lo hubiese hecho, es como si Scaloni hubiese decidido sacar a Messi el día de ayer.
Let's talk about the two most important of the three matches I mentioned. The Portugal-Croatia game was known to be a real nail-biter because I think they're very similar teams. For me, the Portuguese have been a bit of a disappointment. I think they have one of the best squads in this World Cup, but they haven't shown much of that quality on the pitch. Vitinha has had a lackluster World Cup, as has Joao Neves; Cristiano can't do much if he doesn't get the ball, but he's also 41 years old. And coach Roberto Martínez knows this, which is why he dared to substitute him in such a crucial match. Luckily for the Spaniard, his move paid off. Portugal ended up winning, hanging on for dear life, and little was said about the substitution. Was it surprising? - Well, yes. I don't think anyone would have done it; it's like if Scaloni had decided to take Messi off yesterday.
A Portugal le toca verse las caras contra España el día lunes, una España que ganó cómodamente a una inexistente Austria. Si los portugueses quieren pasar a cuartos van a tener que a hacer el partido que todavía no han hecho en este mundial y es que una selección como Croacia, que tampoco demostró mucho, los puso realmente contra la pared, de no ser por un roce de balón en el gol anulado a los croatas en la prorroga esta historia capaz hubiese sido diferente. La cosa es que de nuevo vivimos mucha tensión en un partido pero si de estrés estamos hablando hay que analizar lo que casi sucede el día de ayer en Miami. La previa del Argentina-Cabo Verde hablaba de lo mucho que los argentinos se iban a divertir con la selección africana, por sus mentes no pasaba irse a casa en manos de una selección debutante y claramente inferior. "Por la boca muere el pez" reza un dicho por ahí.
Portugal faces Spain on Monday, a Spain that comfortably defeated a nonexistent Austria. If the Portuguese want to advance to the quarterfinals, they'll have to play the game they haven't yet played in this World Cup. A team like Croatia, which also didn't show much, really pushed them to the limit. Had it not been for a slight touch on the ball in the disallowed Croatian goal in extra time, the outcome might have been different. The point is, we once again witnessed a lot of tension in this match, but if we're talking about stress, we have to analyze what almost happened yesterday in Miami. The pre-match build-up to Argentina vs. Cape Verde was all about how much fun the Argentinians were going to have against the African team; the thought of going home at the hands of a debutant and clearly inferior team never crossed their minds. "The fish dies by its own mouth," as the saying goes.
Ciertamente era impensable que los caboverdianos eliminaran a la actual campeona del mundo pero los partidos hay que jugarlos y eso fue lo que hicieron ayer. Para este servidor Argentina no ha jugado 100% como un espera, tienen jugadores que no están dando lo que se aspira de ellos (De Paul, Almada, Enzo Fernández, Molina y Lautaro Martínez), estos nombres claramente pudieran dar más y en líneas generales no lo están haciendo. Una albiceleste totalmente dependiente de los goles de Messi no se yo que tan favorita pueda ser. La realidad es que contra Cabo Verde se vieron costuras, que ojo, esto es merito de los africanos también pero bueno, al frente estaba Argentina, no cualquier selección.
It was certainly unthinkable that Cape Verde would eliminate the reigning world champions, but matches have to be played, and that's what they did yesterday. In my opinion, Argentina hasn't played at 100% of what I expected. They have players who aren't performing as expected (De Paul, Almada, Enzo Fernández, Molina, and Lautaro Martínez). These players could clearly offer more, and generally speaking, they aren't. An Argentina team completely dependent on Messi's goals—I'm not sure how much of a favorite they can be. The reality is that against Cape Verde, their weaknesses were exposed. Mind you, this is also to the credit of the Africans, but hey, they were facing Argentina, not just any team.
El nivel de exigencia que le impuso Cabo Verde a los argentinos fue máximo y eso hay que decirlo. Fue un gran partido pero por la épica que los africanos estuvieron a punto de lograr. Creo que fue el partido más agónico que se ha vivido en este mundial, de la mano con el de Paraguay-Alemania y el de Portugal-Croacia. Lo que se nos viene en los octavos de final no está escrito. La tendencia no debería de bajar considerando que las selecciones que quedan son las más parejas.
Cape Verde put Argentina under immense pressure, and that has to be said. It was a great match, but what made it truly epic was the near-miss the Africans almost pulled off. I think it was the most nail-biting match of this World Cup, along with Paraguay-Germany and Portugal-Croatia. What awaits us in the round of 16 is unpredictable. The current trend shouldn't change, considering the remaining teams are the most evenly matched.
