Acá el día de hoy yo tendría que estar hablando de Silverstone y de como Ferrari metió a sus dos pilotos en el podio pero como lo hago después de haber presenciado semejante tarde/noche en el mundial. Es por eso que hoy la Formula 1 cede su espacio para comentar el papelón histórico de Brasil ante Noruega y la eliminación, de nuevo en octavos de final, de México. Pero vayamos por orden y comencemos por el primer encuentro. Brasil no era favorita para ganar el mundial pero tampoco se pensaba que estuvieran tan mal como para salir en octavos. Pero la realidad es que Noruega acribilló a Brasil y lo hizo en todos los sentidos posibles y medibles dentro de la cancha. El partido fue aburrido de momentos, pero esa fue la formula que los noruegos usaron y les sirvió a cabalidad.
Today I should be talking about Silverstone and how Ferrari got both their drivers on the podium, but how can I do that after witnessing such a disastrous afternoon/evening at the World Championship? That's why today Formula 1 is taking a backseat to discuss Brazil's historic debacle against Norway and Mexico's elimination, once again in the round of 16. But let's take things one step at a time and start with the first match. Brazil wasn't favored to win the World Championship, but no one expected them to be so bad as to be knocked out in the round of 16. However, the reality is that Norway thrashed Brazil, and they did so in every possible and measurable way on the pitch. The match was boring at times, but that was the formula the Norwegians used, and it worked perfectly for them.

Estos números son preocupantes pero a la vez cero sorpresivos. La canarinha no juega a nada, no hay alegría en su juego, no hay profundidad= y sobretodo, no hay calidad en sus nombres. Hablando con unos amigos nos hacíamos una pregunta, ¿por qué Brasil ya no saca jugadores como los de antes? - y sinceramente no supimos cual sería la respuesta. Brasil tiene más de 200 millones de habitantes, no puede ser que entre tanta gente no haya alguien que juegue mejor que Danilo.

Probablemente lo que definió muchas cosas fue ese primer penal cobrado y que Vinicius no pateó. Honestamente no entendí esa decisión, Vini es un gran pateador de penales pero para Ancelotti era el quinto mejor. La cosa es que la ausencia de Raphinha pegó mucho, lesiones antes del mundial (Estevao) pegaron, el bajo nivel de Neymar porque si, ayer se le vio lento y fuera de forma y que al final Brasil nunca ha tenido esa magia que alguna vez ostentó. Para mi esto es un fracaso grande, salir en octavos es algo inconcebible para una pentacampeona. Pero no es solo salir, es hacerlo jugando muy mal. Bravo por Noruega, por su lado se sabía que iban a dar la sorpresa y miren que la están dando de la mano de una bestia del futbol como lo es Haaland.
What probably defined many things was that first penalty that Vinicius didn't take. Honestly, I didn't understand that decision. Vini is a great penalty taker, but for Ancelotti, he was only the fifth best. The thing is, Raphinha's absence was a big blow, injuries before the World Cup (Estevao) took their toll, Neymar's poor form was a factor—yes, he looked slow and out of shape yesterday—and ultimately, Brazil has never had that magic it once possessed. For me, this is a huge failure; being eliminated in the round of 16 is inconceivable for a five-time champion. But it's not just about being eliminated; it's about doing so while playing so poorly. Well done to Norway; everyone knew they were going to pull off an upset, and look at them now, led by a footballing beast like Haaland.
Pero si hubo otro descenso a la locura futbolística fue el que experimentó México ante Inglaterra con la diferencia de que este golpe fue más anímico y moral que de propio juego. Los coanfitriones llegaban invictos, con el arco en cero y jugando como nunca lo habían hecho en un mundial; creo que las ilusiones estaban bien justificadas. Pero delante tenían a una Inglaterra que no había mostrado mucho pero que le bastaron 2 minutos para sepultar las ganas mexicanas. Creo que en el primer tiempo México jugó espectacular, de haber tenido más efectividad y contundencia claramente el resultado hubiese sido diferente. Creo que un tema acá importante es que después del partido contra Ecuador en donde ciertamente demostraron su mejor futbol llegaron de nuevo al Azteca muy confiados, no digo que eso sea malo pero hay que ser prudentes, en el futbol lo impensable siempre puede pasar.

México perdió quizás porque los cambios no eran los adecuados, sacar a Quiñones y a Gilberto Mora con el marcador en contra no se que tan beneficioso o correcto era y porque al final, con prácticamente 5 delanteros en el área, no era suficiente tirar centros a lo loco, forjar jugadas, paredes o crear espacios era lo adecuado y ahí es cuando precisamente Mora era muy necesario. La maldición de los octavos no deja en paz a los mexicanos cuando quizás más esperanzas había después de habiendo visto la fase de grupos y sobretodo el encuentro contra Ecuador. No se si les daba para ser campeones, está bien tener ganas pero hay que ser realistas, pero si podían haberle ganado a Inglaterra y plantarse en cuartos. Por jugar en casa, con un estadio a sus pies, con un jugador de más en cancha y con el envión con el que venían, México tenía la obligación de ganar; todo estaba escrito para la épica mexicana considerando que NUNCA habían perdido un partido oficial en el estadio Azteca.
Mexico lost perhaps because the substitutions weren't the right ones. Taking off Quiñones and Gilberto Mora with the score against them wasn't exactly beneficial or correct, and in the end, with practically five forwards in the box, it wasn't enough to just send in crosses haphazardly. Building plays, one-twos, and creating space was what was needed, and that's precisely when Mora was crucial. The curse of the round of 16 continues to haunt the Mexicans, especially now that they had perhaps the highest hopes after seeing their performance in the group stage, and particularly the match against Ecuador. I don't know if they were capable of being champions; it's good to have the desire, but we have to be realistic. They could have beaten England and reached the quarterfinals. Playing at home, with a packed stadium, an extra player on the field, and the momentum they had built up, Mexico was obligated to win. Everything was set up for a Mexican epic, considering they had NEVER lost an official match at the Azteca Stadium.
