Closer Look Into Life Around

The Natal forest tree frog (Leptopelis natalensis) as measured around 60mm, adult make 65mm. Features bulging orange-red eyes with vertical pupils and blunt rounded snout. A friendly little visitor that arrived during the night, keeping good company I hope.

Early next morning released into the garden went straight under the leaf of a Bromeliad which has water in the blooms.

Bromeliads have waxy leaves that spiral around a central stem to form a rosette. This creates a funnel-shaped reservoir, or tank, holding water with organic debris and nutrients that are vital to living organisms, survive here in sub-tropical conditions of Durban. Bromeliad tanks make them key players in the tropical ecosystem. Not only is the tank a food and water source for the plant, it is also a place of refuge for insects and small wildlife, like my little tree frog.

Dragonflies busy time of year during the hot months, we have varieties change seasonally always keeping ones eyes ready for something different to enjoy. For identification I would call on @papilloncharity being knowledgeable in all things dragonflies and damselflies.

Pseudocreobotra wahlbergi, or spiny flower mantis, is a small Flower Mantis (1.5 inches or 38 millimetres) native to southern and eastern Africa. Spiny Flower Mantis is an interesting insect as we don't see them often, this appears young, never fear they can take care of themselves known to be feisty. Able to mimic appearance of African plants, sometimes altering to a tinged pink or have had the pleasure of witnessing the green white adult with superb markings only once.

Hydrotaea this fly did not look the same as the common house fly. We have a variety of flies around, not always easy to identify brommers, bluebottle flies, what we call horse flies that do bite so most times I'm simply not a fan of any!
