For more than a century, the idea of an unsinkable ship has inhabited the human imagination, since 1912, when the Titanic sank. Physical engineers and designers have attempted to answer a simple and perplexing question. Is it possible to create structures that simply refuse to sink even when damaged?
The secret is not in engines or pressurized tanks, it is in the surface, the scientists used a laser texturing process on the internal part of the metal, creating millions of microscopic and nanoscopic cavities. These structures make aluminum superhydrophobic, meaning water simply cannot adhere to the surface of the metal.
