Spartacus: Gods of the Arena is an exciting historical action drama set in the days of the gladiators in ancient Rome. The series is a prequel to the original Spartacus series, and it demonstrates what happened prior to the time that Spartacus went on to become a celebrity. It's about the life within Batiatus' gladiator school and the battles for survival, glory and freedom among the men.

The thing I like about this series, is that it depicts the reality of life in the arena in a vivid manner. They were treated as property, and they were required to fight their enemies but also the cruel system that surrounded them. Each show is packed with drama, action, and emotion, ensuring that the audience remains engaged. The battles are violent, rehearsed, and the audience feels the danger that is faced by the fighters every day.

The main character of the series is Gannicus, a talented and fearless gladiator. Unlike many fighters who are bound to follow the rules, he is different in the sense that he likes his freedom and would like to live his life on his own terms. Gannicus is a skilled, confident, entertainer. One of the best things about the series is his trip. I dig his character because he is not on the up and up. He also makes mistakes; he demonstrates courage and loyalty when it counts the most.

The other aspect of the story is the desire of Batiatus and his wife Lucretia. They want to amass their power, their respect, in Rome. Throughout the series, they manipulate people and make tough decisions to get what they want. They are responsible for many of the conflicts in the story. The political intrigue, betrayals and secrets are as important as the battle itself. It also turns into a tale of power, greed and ambition.

Gods of the Arena has a lot of great acting. The actors are convincing in their role playing and make the audience care about the fate of their characters. Whether the characters are celebrating a win or losing a battle or revenge, the emotions seem real. The performances enhance the story, making it more interesting and memorable.

Another standout is the graphics of the series. The show creates the ancient Roman atmosphere by utilizing dramatic slow-motion scenes, high-energy battle scenes and costumes. But, the special effects aren't quite up to scratch today, but they do help inject some excitement into the action. The arena scenes are particularly spectacular as they depict the action and violence of gladiatorial fighting.

But not all are suited for the series. Very violent and vulgar with a lot of grown-up stuff. There are some scenes that are more graphic than may be suitable for some viewers. Sometimes the level of blood and violence is too much. These elements are employed to depict the severity of this time period, but may lead some viewers to be uncomfortable with this series.

But Spartacus: Gods of the Arena still tells a compelling tale, despite these flaws. It's filled with action, drama, friendship, betrayal and ambition and it never lets the viewer down from start to finish. The series also gives viewers a bit of background on some of the more important characters of the original Spartacus story. Being a prequel, it feels complete and satisfying as a standalone, even though the story is actually from before.

I loved the series, because it has a lot more than action on it personally. It examines the desires, problems, and cost of power and freedom of people. Memorable characters, engaging story and exciting action scenes. If you're a lover of historical dramas and gladiator tales, this series is a must-watch.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐☆☆ (8/10)

Spartacus: Gods of the Arena is an action-packed and fun series with great characters, great action and a great story! It may not be everyone's cup of tea but it is certainly one of the most memorable gladiator dramas ever produced.
