Many people believe that a musician is somebody who sings and plays an instrument or is on the big stage. There are also some who feel that in order to be a musician you have to be known. But, I don't believe that's the case. I believe that being a musician is far more than the fame, the money and/or the popularity. A true musician is the one who loves music, never stops learning and can communicate by music and connect with others.
Anyone who is a musician first and foremost needs to have a passion for it. If someone loves music, he will always enjoy making music, listening to it and practicing it. Even without a public or without payment such a person enjoys making music. I've seen that those who love music don't give up easily. They're still working on it, being that music is a part of them. Even when things get tough, a musician's passion will keep him going.

Commitment also is a significant feature. Great musicians don't just happen out of nowhere. It takes time and patience to sing, write songs or learn how to play a musical instrument. In order to be a musician, you have to be ready to practice, practice, practice. There will be mistakes made, but each mistake will be a learning opportunity. I think this is one of the best indicators of a real musician, that they practice constantly, as talent is not enough to succeed.
Originality is also the key to becoming a musician. Music is more than repeating sounds. It's about making something worthwhile. A music composer can compose tracks based on his own adventures, feelings, dreams, or even events occurring internationally. Each song tells a story in some fashion. I like listening to songs with deep messages as it shows that the musician has something of value to offer.
A true musician also knows how music can reach people's hearts. Music can soothe the sore heart, strengthen the weak mind, and delight the glad heart. Certain songs can motivate people when they are struggling. Other people assist families to celebrate special occasions. Music becomes more than entertainment when the musician creates music that positively affects others. It turns into a blessing to society.
Membership of a small minority is not something to neglect and modesty is another attribute. Some musicians get a big head when they start to do well, but good musicians know that there is always a new thing to learn. They take good advice, have regard for other musicians, and keep themselves improving as musicians. I like musicians who are kind and polite; their character is as beautiful as their music.
Also bear in mind, that the musician does not need to be well known. There are so many talented individuals who perform music in church, school, community events and even in their own homes. They may not be celebrities, but they are still musicians because they apply their gifts conscientiously. A musician is not a celebrity. It's when it becomes a commitment, when you are passionate about music and when you are ready to continue learning that it counts.
Finally, having the most expensive gear, most followers on social media and being seen by many isn't what makes a musician a musician. It takes passion, dedication, creativity, humility and a desire to use music to make a positive difference. I think that anyone with a sincere love for music, who strives to get better and who plays it with a positive heart is a musician. There is a more to music than creating beautiful sounds, there is a more to music than touching lives, there is a more to music than expressing what words cannot.
