Indonesia is actively exploring the possibility of adopting Bitcoin as a national reserve asset to boost its economy. This initiative is being pushed primarily by the office of the Vice President, who recently invited members of Bitcoin Indonesia, the largest Bitcoin community in the country, to discuss how Bitcoin could benefit the nation’s economic strategy.
The potential to diversify Indonesia’s national reserves beyond traditional fiat currencies like the U.S. dollar and gold, aiming to hedge against inflation and global economic volatility.
A proposal that Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund might allocate a significant portion of assets (estimated IDR 300 trillion, or about $18.3 billion) to accumulate Bitcoin, with forecasts suggesting this could secure up to 200,000 BTC. Profits from Bitcoin’s appreciation could help reduce national debt.
The Indonesian side is also considering a “bold” strategy of leveraging Bitcoin mining domestically as part of its reserve management and economic development plans.
The discussions link Bitcoin’s long-term value proposition with Indonesia’s 100th year of independence in 2045, signaling confidence in Bitcoin’s potential growth as a store of value.
While the proposal has garnered support, it has also sparked debate. Indonesia’s financial regulator, the Financial Services Authority is cautious but open to further discourse, emphasizing the need for strong regulation and governance if Bitcoin is to be integrated into national reserves.
Unlike El Salvador’s approach of adopting Bitcoin as authorized currency, Indonesia’s plan is more about strategic reserve diversification and complementing its Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) efforts by treating Bitcoin as an external asset similar to gold or foreign currency holdings.
If implemented, Indonesia would become one of the first Southeast Asian countries to officially include Bitcoin in its sovereign wealth fund, potentially positioning itself as a regional leader in integrating digital assets into public economic strategy.
