A few days ago I had just arrived at the beach when I noticed something in the water, in the shallow water.

I took my phone and immediately started filming. I could not even imagine what I would see..

It was a flying (or gliding) fish!! (In Greek we call it Chelidonopsaro (means swallow-bird fish)

You can see a short video here - with more information about them

Flying fish are fascinating creatures. They have a unique ability to glide above the water's surface and the reason for this is to escape predators. They can accelerate in the the water and achieve great speeds while gliding distances of over 200 meters.

There are approximately 40 different species of flying fish and they can be found in warm ocean waters. They exhibit various sizes and colors.

Their ability to glide does not only protect them from predators, but also helps them cover large distances more efficiently while searching for food and spawning areas.

Flying fish are very important for the ocean ecosystem.

  • They are a food resource for dolphins, tuna fish and more
  • They are considered a delicacy in cultures such as Japan or Caribbean
  • They are a very interesting species to research for biologists and researchers.

Have you ever tasted such a fish?
Would you?

I dont think that I could - I prefer admiring it in the open sea
I hope I will be lucky to witness more of them soon!

Thank you very much for reading!
