AN UNPOPULAR OPINION

I have some opinions that a lot of people might not agree with, one of them is that everyone has the right to go viral in whichever way they choose, and other is that bad publicity is better than no publicity. A lot of people would usually disagree because of cultural, social or religious values, but on the grand scale of things these things don't matter as much as some people tend to make it matter. There are contents I would try to avoid consuming because of my own cultural, social and spiritual or religious values, but that does not mean if there are people who like those contents, they should just abandon it and stop creating simply because I hate it. Even if I have the power to stop such content, I would never do so for personal reasons even though those reasons are morally acceptable. But then again I would not also watch and allow such content to corrupt innocent minds, therefore I would rather put policies in place to hide them from the eyes of the general public.

From my explanation above you can see it is not a matter of having values, or doing what is right, it is a matter of going viral. Yes people would do anything to go viral, but have you sat to think about what going viral really means for those who would do anything for it?. For some it would mean they can live comfortably, for others it means they can be on the global stage, there are those who want to be remembered for something, anything at all so long they believed in it. For some, as weird as it may sound, it is their legacy and they would do anything to achieve it. So long they are not hurting anyone in the process, it’s their fundamental human right. Then when you think of this on a deeper level and ask who makes these people go viral? You will note that it is you and me. In fact, those who hate what they do make them go viral more than those who love what they do. When people see something they hate, they want to expose it, and talk it down stating their intentions and looking for supporters. But in that process they forget that they can not control the people who see these things.

This is why I say bad publicity is better than no publicity because at the end of the day, the views, shares, likes and comments are spreading the word about what they do and while you are busy hating them, wondering where they got the guts to do whatever they did to go viral, they are busy enjoying the fruits of their labour and you are there thinking they are foolish. The people who spread the words are the more foolish ones. If you do not like a content, do not comment on it, do not reshare it, do not even hate on it. It’s what the content creator needs to grow and you are giving them that free publicity. They have every right to do what they did, you have every right to run your mouth on social media condemning or praising it, but who gains at the end of the day is what matters in the grand scheme of things.
