If there is one aspect of life humans really allow to go extinct, it is our morality. Our grandparents and great grandparents would often speak of how their time was simpler than ours because then you can easily trust the words of people. Then a person does not have to be in their shop 24/7, because they know that when people buy, they will surely pay. Now you can’t try that. Trust has been broken in the world and people no longer know what to believe. A lot of the time (even here on hive) people have preyed on the sympathy of humans and made it look like a joke. Our humanity has been taken for weakness and it has made a lot of people skeptical about just being humans. You could see someone dying on the streets and not choose to help because you do not want to be a victim when you were only trying to help and this is the same almost everywhere you go making it look as though humanity stopped caring.
But the truth is more simple, it isn’t that we stopped caring, it is that we are afraid. One time I was coming from work and saw a young boy who sells sachet water crying on the streets while the water he was carrying was on the ground scattered on the road. At first glance you will be moved to want to help him, but I realized that the locals around there did not move a finger so I passed by watching him. He looked at me with that pitiful face expecting me to come and ask what happened but I didn’t. However I stood far off to watch him closely pondering if I should go back and offer help, then I saw something that shocked me. First was when one of the locals told him in pidgin that there is no business today and luck wasn’t on his side that is why no one has come. I saw him pack his stuff after that. I was still around the neighbourhood when I saw him come back 30 minutes later to scatter his stuff on the road and start all over again.
That sight made me realize that he had an agenda to get money from people dubiously and he did not care how he got the money. These kinds of things go on online too and to be honest that is why I hardly participate in crowdfunding. I am often very skeptical about these things and do not want to give my hard earned money to someone who doesn’t know the value of money. It would take undeniable proof for me to help someone I do not know online except I am just being generous and would give regardless of whether they are trying to play the smart one. I have been in lack, I know what it means to be in lack and would not wish that on anyone. People who know me know that I always try to help if I can, but then again, I would only participate in a crowdfunding project if the situation is obvious to everyone or I personally know the person I am doing it for, else I keep my money to myself.
