KNOWING A CHILD

Children are different, and this difference is what makes them unique. One of the lessons I learned from my mum growing up is that no child is dumb, and because a child is not performing well in general education does not make them dumb. Another thing I do not like is the idea of thinking the general school is okay for every child. There are children that do not do well socializing with other children, not because they do not like to, but because they are not just like that. It isn’t who they are, and forcing them into the general school system is like putting a fish on land and expecting it to run. These kinds of children need special education, and such education doesn’t just come from the general educational system. Sometimes it’s not even because of the school system, it may be that the child’s IQ is higher than normal kids and they do not think like normal kids. Putting them in the same class as their mates turns out to be a poor way of helping them learn because they won’t even learn anything.

I remember when my younger brother was growing up, a lot of his teachers thought he was dumb. He was always coming out last in class, the day his result came out and he discovered he did better than three other students in a class of almost 30 he was so happy. But with everything, my mum never allowed him to feel he was dumb even when my dad tried to say otherwise. He wasn’t good at the normal educational system, and so my mum began to notice he had interest in other things. He was the kind of child that does well with people, but also had a curious mind. He would normally ask what his mates considered to be dumb questions and could not seat down to read the normal way. But then his love for music was so clear, he also loved technical and engineering stuff. Anything that makes him scatter and reassemble things called to him, so my mum decided to change his school to a more technical school where he could do a lot of practicals. Although it was expensive, to her it was worth it.

Then we started teaching him to turn his books into songs seeing he could compose songs out of anything. From there he began to pick up. He did well to the point that he was representing his school in state competitions. This is why I think the idea is not to homeschool a child or leave them in a general school system, but the idea is to first understand the child enough to know the best way to school them. Some children will never do well with homeschool, they might feel bored and might not learn as they would if they were in the general school system. Others will only perform well if they were homeschooled, while there are those who need the general school system and still need extra lessons at home. It does not make them dull, it is just what they need to grow and do well in life.
