People talk about how easy it is to learn, and to be honest I really envy them because I do not know how they do it. Learning isn’t easy for me, it never has been. I find it easier to cram than to actually learn. For me learning is work that requires continuous discipline. I remember how scared I used to be of learning how to drive, it took me about three months to learn not because I could not learn faster but because I was scared and the only thing that kept me going was the need to overcome that fear. This is why I would rather someone teach me or I learn on the job than actually sitting down to learn on my own. I have tried learning a lot of things on my own, some I learned and most I was only able to learn halfway. This is because I do not do well learning on my own, it’s a fatal weakness and I know it. The only way I have learned to the point I am in right now is through shared will and motivation.

I remember how long it took for me to learn about Hive, so much frustration, nearly giving up and at a point all I wanted to do was just dump it, but then again I reasoned that if I just put a little effort I should be able to learn something. I started reading posts, and continued trying for over 9 months until I finally got my breakthrough and finally understood how the system worked. I’m a slow learner I guess, but I was so happy after I had learned and today I am still here learning and evolving. I wonder how it would have been if I had given up, I wonder how I would have survived if I had given up simply because I could not understand or because I was finding it difficult to phantom the complexity of the chain, or because I was putting in my best but was getting little or no result at the end of the day. The learning process was not easy for me at all, but then, it is an experience I would never forget in my life.

One of the easiest things I learned however was web development. This wasn’t because it was easy or because I had no difficulty learning it, but rather it was because I had no choice but to learn on the job. My work demanded I produce results and give a report of those results. When our online security was attacked, my work demanded I found a solution. And even though none of these were easy with some even giving me sleepless nights, I had to learn regardless. I guess that is just what pressure does. I do the things I do not because I want to, but because I have to. Learning for me is not luxury and to be honest if I had my way I would have been so lazy. But when responsibilities keep knocking I must answer and step up or else I would have to step aside.
